This all started two weeks ago and I’ve had to give up my part-time job to answer calls, and we may need to buy a telephone answer ing machine.” So far, the Lindseys have sent out 200 applications to prospec tive members of a Texas chapter of AirLifeLine — a non-profit volun teer organization made up of pilots willing to donate their time and use their equipment free to help with medical emergencies. Such emergencies would in clude delivering vital organs for transplantation and rare blood types for transfusion when there is neither time nor opportunity to use commercial airlines. AirLifeLine was founded in Sacramento, Calif, three years ago by businessman Tom Good win, who realized pilots are in a unique situation in that they enjoy flying in their spare time but also must do it to maintain their skills and meet licensing requirements. He saw AirLifeLine as a way to use the time spent in an expensive hobby to help others. A plug from “Dear Abby” gave the program national attention and also caught the eye of Keith Lindsey, a retired Air Force pilot and Federal Aviation Administra tion employee who volunteered to coordinate a Texas branch. Lindsey, 61, said he began won dering if help was needed in the area after watching a television story about the new coordinated transplant program at the Univer sity of Texas Health Center at Dal las. The program includes coordi nating bankable organs — such as skin, corneas, cartilege and others capable of being stored for trans plantation at a later time — with recipients. He made contact health science center there was a need. “The development of suet organization operating out Texas could be an invaluable^ not only to the state but whole Southwest,” said Di Charles R. Baxter, a surgery pi; fessor at the UT health center well as being in charge of the Pa land Memorial Hospital Bn Unit and directing the UT-Lio: Transplant Program in Dallas News of Lindsey’s elr spread, prompting more andk? offers of help. Mrs. Keith Lindsa said individual pilots as corporations have offered tls planes. Several flight organs tions also have offered aid. Hi Lindseys hope to use theantkp 1946 Stinson Voyager Lindst flies. They say some doctors andh# pitals are not taking the Ten chapter seriously yet, fear:; there may he a catch. “But there’s no charge tol doctor, the patient or al,” said Mrs. Lindsey. “Even body is donating their free lira airplanes and fuel.” And while the pilots will getlli satisfaction of knowing they doing some good for others, Is also will be keeping up theirsH and will be able to deduct somt their expenses from income Ian as a result. Mrs. Lindsey said it is so® what ironic that her husband,w plans soon to be flying for ans charter airline out of Houstos would be involved in such an deavor as transporting organs blood. “He’s never liked hospiti she said. “Whenever I’d have baby — I’ve had five of them-! would drop me off at the door® run like hell and wouldn’t era hack until it was all over.
