Page 14 THE BATTALION FRIDAY, OCTOBER 23, 1981 Sports '■Wl Tennis team to host second three-way tourney of year By RICK STOLLE Battalion Staff Going into the second Texas A&M three-way tour nament this fall, the Texas A&M tennis team is look ing to play some tough tennis as Southwest Texas State University and Louisiana Tech come to A&M to challenge the Aggies. “We will be out to play,” said Aggie tennis coach David Kent. “We can use the experience against some tough competition.” Kent said Southwest was the defending NCAA Division I national champions and that Louisiana Tech always has a good team. “Southwest Texas does not have as strong a team as they had last year,” the coach said. “But I think they will be out there to get after us.” He said he was expecting both teams to play well against A&M. “I don’t know what it is,” Kent said, “but they all seem to play harder against the Aggies. ” The tournament begins today at the Omar Smith Tennis Center on the campus of Texas A&M near the campus police station with the first round of singles at 1 p.m. The second round is scheduled for 3:30 this afternoon. Kent said he was concerned with the general health of his team. Brian Joelson has had a bad cold all week and Kent said that might effect his play. And he has also been looking at a number of other players who have been slowed by colds and the flu. “BJ’s cold has hurt him more than the others,” Kent said. “He has really had a rough fall so far. Briar hasn’t had as much work as everybody else because he went to Portland for a week to watch the Davis Cup semifinals.” In the first round, Aggies Kim mo Alkio, Mike Pazourek and Joelson have byes. Chuck Nunn oi Southwest also has a bye. All three are seeded in the tournament. Lauro Gonzalez of A&M will play Tommy Clay of Tech, Ron Kowal will go against Sam Elliot of South west, Genaro Fernandez will play Russ Angell of Southwest, Arnold Kettnacker will go against David Attong of Tech, Greg Hill will battle Roger Gon salves of Tech and Van Barry goes against Louise Stevens of Southwest in first round singles action. The doubles get under way Saturday morning at 10:30. Aggie teams Joelson-Pazourek and Alkio-Barry have received byes in the first round. Hill-Kowal will go against Angell-Bramiett of Southwest and Fer- nandez-Kettenacker will play an independent team of Clay-Stevens. “We each had an odd player,” said Kent. “So I put the two from Southwest and Tech together and got a graduate student to play with our odd man.” The second independent team is made of of Gonzalea and graduate student Dwight Edwards. The finals of the tournament will be Sunday. Sing les are scheduled to be at 9 a. m. with the doubles at 1:30 p.m. team hosts tourney Volleyball By GAYE DENLEY Battalion Staff The Aggie volleyball team will kick off the Texas A&M Tourna ment today against Lamar Univer sity, a team the women defeated for the third time this season Wednesday night in G.
