Dr. Robert L. Whiting, a petroleum engineering professor at Texas A&M University, said Thursday night in a presentation on oil retrieval in the Brazos Val ley. The presentation, called “Boomtown, U.S.A.,” was given at the Brazos Valley Museum in the Brazos Center. Whiting, the former head of the Texas A&M petroleum engineer ing department, has 43 years of experience in the oil industry. Whiting, who has been a con sultant for almost every major oil company in the world, said the oil industry will bring “hundreds of millions of dollars to this (Bryan- Giddings) area.” The oil industry will provide employment and community growth, and more money will be spent in this area as the population increases, Whiting said. Oil pro duction adds tremendously to a city’s tax revenue, he said. “The oil companies like this area because it costs $750,000 to develop a well here compared with $4 million to $12 million to develop a well in Colorado or Wyoming,” Whiting said. However, Whiting said that the Bryan-College Station area has been more resistant to the de velopment of the local oil indus try. “Virtually every other com munity encourages oil produc tion," Whiting said. “During the ten years after ‘Doc’ World War II, ^ (namesake of the petroleum* gineering building) and 11 surveys in this area and < lot of dry holes, but we knewti was oil here,” Whiting said | “Now there are 8,000 andSI feet oil wells south of College! tion that, on the average, are! ducing about $35,000 wortli| a day. “The Giddings oil fieldpuj | about 128,000 barrels ofo 1977. Osborn, 755 Sunny Lane, who opposed the re zoning, said the area has been zoned single family for 30 years and should stay that way. There will be considerably more noise, she said, and she will lose her privacy if the townhouses are built instead of single family. “I see no redeeming grace to the area if the rezoning takes place,” she said. J. W. Wood, developer for the project, said he plans to build six townhouses per acre with a 40-foot wide strip of land covered with trees. He said the trees, most of them 30 to 40 feet tall, will protect the neighbors’ privacy and help keep noise confined to the project area. A single family zone R-l has a maximum development of eight units per acre with a maximum height of 35 feet. The townhouse zone R-3 allows 14 dwelling units per acre with the same height restriction. In other business, the commis sion discussed the Woodson Vil lage project near Holleman Drive, which calls for the addition of 25 single family lots to the develop ment. The project was tabled at the Sept. 17 commission meeting. The area residents oppose the project because of the strain they say the additional lots would put on the sewer system. City Engineer Elrey Ash said there have been reported backups in the sewer system for several years. The city is running a study to determine the cause of the system failure but must wait until the area gets an inch of rain. Ash said it is costing thej $1,000 each day it doesn’t raiil cause the equipment for thesj is rented. The equipment, set up itV manholes in the area, meassl the flow of the water at vaj points in the sewer line. This will show the city where the water is comingii line, Ash said. He said it will take45dayd the study is completed tobri the data together and see' and what the problems are The commission also postp granting a conditional use[ for the Maranatha Christian Cl tei at 313 College Main untilil ter drawings for the pdl spaces and building renortl are brought to the commissnl Medieval knights and swashbucklers to duel at 1:30 by Rudder fountain BY S Knights in shining armor and swashbucklers will duel today be tween 1:30 and 2 p.m. in front of Rudder fountain.
