Mike Martin, R-Longview — who twice shun ned subpoenas to testify — volun tarily answered questions before a Travis County grand jury for half an hour but offered no new infor mation about a shooting he FOR RENT Welcome Back Aggies! 1 A&M REALTY And APARTMENT PLACEMENT A' Serving the Aggies since 1971. Martin, 29, smiled briefly at reporters at the courthouse Tues day before he was wished into a side hallway that led to the grand jury room. He was accompanied on the drive from Longview by his mother, brother and a family friend. The freshman legislator had said he wanted to discuss the case after speaking before the grand jury. However, an investigator with the district attorney’s office said Martin later changed his mind. Assistant District Attorney H. Allen Hill said Martin answered questions before the grand jury for about an half hour, but would not comment on what was said. Hill did say no indictments against Martin or others involved in the case would be forthcoming soon. “I think he resolved a lot of questions just by showing up,” Hill said. Charles Goff, Martin’s cousin, gave police a statement last week saying that he had fired four shot gun blasts at Martin in the pre dawn hours of July 31. Goff said he intentionally wounded Martin in the left arm and that the attack was meant to further Martin’s chances at gaining a Senate seat. Goff was the next witness before the grand jury after Martin. However Martin, who at one point said a satanic cult was be hind the shooting, denies Goffs claims. Martin now maintains that the attack was made by his Gregg County political enemies, appa rently to ruin his career. Clutching the belts of three in vestigators from the district attor ney’s office, Martin was pulled through a horde of reporters and out of the courthouse. His brother, Walter, drove him away from the courthouse in a. motor home. Hill said Martin was not ex pected to appear before the panel again but that he was confident the case would be resolved. He said any indictments handed out in the case would be done so together. ‘Whorehouse’ authoi sa tirizes legisla ture United Press International NEW YORK — Only the man who co-authored “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas” could be Parking Hassle? Larry L. King, after all, speaks Texan even better than Housto nian anchorman Dan Rather, and he speaks it “right good” as they would say in the land of the arma dillo and the Alamo tonight on “CBS Reports.” “I’ve been writing about Texas — kicking it, cheering it, bragging on it — longer than I care to re member,” King says in opening the hour-long look into the corri dors of power where Texas politi cians “cut deals and take names.” The result is a far cry from what the average school child learns in his civics class. The civics class never taught anyone about the two-fisted lob byists who outnumber Texas law makers, 8 to 1. The civics class never went into the wheeling and dealing, the shootouts, the fist shaking and the unabashed horse trading that accompanies any bill on its perilous way through house and senate. King — once described by a li terary critic as an author who “writes like an angel would if it grew up in West Texas and drank ’ — repairs the oversight of the civics class. Under his tutelage, mere mor tal voters see how it’s really done on Olympus and the result is both an education and an entertain ment. “The Best Little Statehouse in Texas” is a solid piece of broadcast journalism, but like “The Best Lit tle Whorehouse in Texas,” it’s good theater too. When the latter finally runs its string out on Broad way, King just might have a suc cessor in the wings.
