As a result the Rangers and Brewers split two games Tuesday night — a double header that might easily have been swept by either club. Milwaukee had whipped Texas in the opener, 3-1, thanks to a good outing from starter Moose Haas but also thanks to an excellent re lief job from Rollie Fingers. It was Fingers’ 16th save of the season, second in the American League to New York’s Goose Gossage. “Maybe all those hits will help us break out,” said Texas manager Don Zimmer, who saw his team come up with 11 hits in an 8-6 second-game victory. “Some of them were kind of cheap, but the other guys have been getting a lot of cheap hits off us. ” It was the first explosion of hit ting by Texas since the end of the strike. Milwaukee was protecting its 3-1 lead in the eighth inning, but Texas had the bases loaded and only one out when Fingers was summoned. He retired Buddy Bell on a popup and got John Grubb to hit into a force play. “Coming into that situation is no piece of cake,” said Fingers, who has saved four victories in his last four apperances. “But I am used to coming in in pressure situations. “I think the thing that helped me tonight was the weather. The cool weather here was nice. ” Major League Baseball National League American League East East Detroit 6 3 .667 New York 6 2 .750 — Milwaukee 7 4 .636 St. Louis 5 2 .714 Va Baltimore 5 3 .625 ‘4 Montreal 4 3 .571 HA Toronto 5 4 .556 1 Chicago 4 5 .444 2*4 New York 4 5 .444 2 Philadelphia 2 6 .250 4 Boston 3 5 .375 2*4 Pittsburgh 2 7 .222 4V4 Cleveland 3 7 .300 3)4 West West Oakland 5 2 .714 Houston 6 3 .667 Seattle 6 3 .667 Atlanta 5 3 .625 Va Chicago 5 4 .556 1 Los Angeles 5 4 .556 1 Kansas City 5 5 .500 1*4 San Francisco 5 4 .556 1 Texas 4 4 .500 1*4 Cincinnati 4 4 .500 1*4 Minnesota 3 7 .300 3)4 San Diego 2 7 .222 4 California 1 6 .143 4 Tuesday’s Results Wednesday’s Games Tuesday’s Results Wednesday’s Games Milwaukee 3, Texas 1 Houston 4, Montreal 2 Montreal at Houston Texas 8, Milwaukee 6 Milwaukee at Texas Los Angeles 5, Chicago 0 San Diego at St. Louis New York 4, Chicago 0 Chicago at New York San Francisco 4, Pittsburgh 2 Philadelphia at Cincinnati Detroit 3, Minnesota 0 Minnesota at Detroit New York 4, Atlanta 0 New York at Atlanta Toronto 5, Kansas City 3 Toronto at Kansas City Cincinnati 3, Philadelphia 1 San Francisco at Pittsburgh Baltimore 6, California 5 Baltimore at California San Diego 4, St. Louis 3 Los Angeles at Chicago Oakland 3, Boston 2 Boston at Oakland Cleveland 5, Seattle 2 Cleveland at Seattle Astros outpitch Expos in 4-2 win United Press International HOUSTON — Houston Astros manager Bill Virdon said held pitcher Bob Knepper on the mound one inning more than hestion but he thought the big left-hander had earned a shot a shutout. Knepper was one out away from his fifth shutout when Montre, Larry Parrish drilled a two-run homer Tuesday night, but it w*, enough to stop the Astros from taking a 4-2 victory. “I felt strong, but I felt like my control and command wereofi night,” said Knepper, now 6-2. A shutout would have tied Knepper for the league lead “Knepper stayed in one inning too long, but he had earnedtlie to try for a shut out,” Virdon observed. Cesar Cedeno, breaking out of a slump, went 3-for-4 and drove three runs to spark the Houston offense. He singled home a run in the first inning and singled home two runs in the eighth. Parrish’s homer came on a 31 count with the Expos trailing “I just happened to get a hold of it. He was pitching his bi balls inside, which is sort of a change from the last few times we him. Vol. 74 32 Pag Knepper was relieved by Joe Sambito, who got the final oulj register his seventh save. >1 CLEAR THE DECK SALE THIS IS THE SALE YOU’VE BEEN WAITING FOR!
