The department, along with the Texas State Library and the Texas Natural Resource Information System, will be the primary dis seminating agencies of the State Data Center Program. The prog ram, which involves a cooperative arrangement between the state and the U.S. Bureau of the Cen sus, is intended to increase the availability and accessibility of the 1980 census data. The three agen cies will be responsible for provid ing information on population changes, characteristics and trends in Texas. “Most of the census data are not yet available, however, because of lawsuits pending against the U.S. Bureau of the Census,’’ said Dr. Steve Murdock, head of Texas A&M’s Department of Rural Sociology, a part of the Texas Agri cultural Experiment Station. The only information currently avail able is the redistricting data which provides population counts by ethnicity for all units of govern ment and census areas in Texas. “Data on sex, age, income, occupation and other characteris tics of the population will not be available until late fall of 1981 or early 1982,’’ Murdock said. Until then Murdock and two other Texas A&M demographers, Drs. R.L. Skrabanek and Patricia Guseman, are using the redistrict ing data to prepare several analy ses of patterns of population change in Texas for the Texas 2000 staff and readying the system that is to distribute the census da the public. “We will be the prime pient for the taped inform! from the Census Bureau,”! dock said. “We will testallcot: ter tapes to be sure they cot the correct information, pn backup tapes to store the infer tion and log the tapes into at puterized filing system. “Next we will copy thetj and distribute them to the level in the State Data Cej eight state affiliates.
