The R/V Excellence II and the IVY Quest were formally commis sioned following their purchase by the Texas Engineering Experi ment Station, the engineering re search arm of the Texas A&M Uni versity System. The vessels will be used pri marily in environmental en gineering programs supporting the federal government’s Strate gic Petroleum Reserve Project. Other activities in which they may be involved vary from oceanog raphic research to water sampling and oil spill control and training. The R/V Excellence II is a 72- foot steel-hulled vessel similar in appearance to a shrimp boat. The $325,000 craft was built by John Collins of Alvin, who made a dona tion to cover part of the construc tion cost. The R/V Quest, a 48-foot converted yacht, is valued at $200,000 but was made available to TEES at a reduced cost by the University of Texas Marine Scien ce Institute. The new ships join five other Aggie vessels — ranging from the R/V Gyre, which will be involved this summer in attempts to locate the Titantic, to the Texas Clipper, the converted oceanliner used as a training ship by the Texas Mari time College — in operations from docks at the Mitchell Campus of Texas A&M University at Gal veston. In his christening address, Texas A&M-Galveston President William H. Clayton compared marine and oceanographic studies to efforts put into the space program. “We’re all still basking in the afterglow of the highly successful shuttle shot and our future is in deed bright in space,” he said, "but I am confident that we have even more to reap and gain from the ocean, and we will do it through efforts such as made pos sible by the addition of these two vessels to our inventory. “While funds for such efforts will apparently be more difficult to obtain in the future, particularly from federal sources, we must not despair but rather intensify our ingenuity and determination to progress.” Dr. Roy W. Hann Jr., Texas A&M professor and head of the TEES Environmental Engineer ing Division, noted that for the past 14 years his group has carried out a program to evaluate the en vironmental impact of engineered works and products on the coastal zone of Texas. “During this period, we have studied pollution problems in the Houston Ship Channel and almost every other major industrialized channel and port in Texas,” Hann said. “Other investigations have focused on environmental modifi cations such as new and enlarged channels, ports and canalled com munities, offshore deep-water ports, ocean dumping, oil spills, and more recently, the brine dis charges from the Strategic Pet roleum Reserve Program in Texas and Louisiana.” Seiko watch • leave message. 696-7313. 143t5 LOST $50 Reward for lost puppy, miniature col lie. DALY Battalion Reporter RECALL. STEP OFF ON HULLABALOO. That’s Jason Clark’s line, and it’s enough to get the largest milit ary band in the world ready to march. Clark has been selected to be the 1981-82 head drum major for the 300-member Fightin’ Texas Aggie Band. An engineering tech nology major from Hereford, Clark was chosen from among 13 band members to lead the group along with Scott R. Sloan and Rod ney Kret. Sloan, an engineering technol ogy major from Fort Worth, will be the infantry band drum major, and Kret, a petroleum engineer ing major from Refugio, will lead the artillery band. Tryouts lasted two days, with a 15-member committee choosing the drum majors. The committee was comprised of Lt. Col. Joe Haney, band director, Maj. Joe McMullen, associate director, and 13 band members. The three drum majors were selected on the basis of baton con trol, clarity of voice while issuing commands in the band room and on the field, whistle commands, posture, military bearing and con fidence, Clark said. The head drum major serves as the band’s liason between the band and Haney, Clark said. The other two majors assist the head drum major, Sloan said, and keep the marching roster — who will march at each game — up to date. Sloan said there are 350 to 370 men in the band, but only 300 march during each halftime per formance. Sloan and Kret will have the responsibility to see that everyone gets to march at least once, Sloan said. On the field the head drum ma jor executes flourishes, the diffe rent patterns of the drill, while the other two drum majors direct the band, Sloan said. He said it’s im portant for band members to be able to see the two drum majors because sometimes the crowd is so loud, band members can’t hear the music. Both Clark and Sloan said they came to Texas A&M University to be in the band. DIETING?
