CHRISTLIEB Battalion Staff The Texas A&M baseball team certainly knows how to keep its fans on the edges of their seats — even if almost all of them can fit in one seat. In front ofa meager Olsen Field crowd of about 200, the Aggies swept a double header from Sam Houston State University Tues day night by scores of 7-6 and 4-3. The Aggies are now 23-14-1, while the Bearkats, ranked 16th in this week’s NAIA poll, are 28-13. The Aggies hit well in the first (game, pitched well in the second game and played excellent de fense in both games on their way to the sweep. They made several outstanding defensive plays dur ing a double header which was so close it could easily have been an SHSU sweep rather than an A&M sweep. The Aggies won the first game in extra innings by scoring a run in the bottom of the eighth on a dou ble by Clint Heard and an RBI single by David Kennard. Heard and Kennard led the A&M ofiense with three hits apiece, while Tom Dean Chandler had two hits. SHSU scored in the first inning off A&M starting pitcher Robert Slavens on a single, a stolen base, and an RBI single. The Aggies scored one run to tie the game in their half of the first on a solo home run by third baseman Tim Boyes. In the third, the Bearkats took the lead 3-1 on two walks, a sacri fice and a two-run single. Howev er, the Aggies scored three runs in the bottom of the third to make the score 4-3 on a single, an error, a walk and a following two-run single by Mark Magee. Slavens seemed to take com mand when he struck out the side swinging in the fourth, at one point retiring seven batters in a row. But when the Bearkats loaded the bases with two out in the sixth. Coach Tom Chandler brought in reliever David Flores to replace Slavens. Flores immediately gave up a three-run single to pinch-hitter David Plummer, making the score 6-4 after six innings. That lead did not last long, however, as the Aggies scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game on a single, two walks, another error and a RBI ground ball. Flores, 4-3, won the game when Heard and Kennard combined for the winning run in the eighth. In the second game, all four of the Aggies’ runs and all five of their hits came in the first three innings. In the first inning, Joe Paul Bramhall’s bloop double and a wild pitch scored a run to make the score 1-0. The Aggies scored two more runs in the second inning on three hits, a stolen base and an error. They scored their last run in the third on a walk, a double and a sacrifice fly. Freshman Marvin Keller, after having pitched only eight innings all year, started and won the second game for the Aggies. Pitch ing exceptionally well, he retired 14 of the first 16 batters he faced, when Perry Swanson relieved him with one out in the sixth. teachers llr Oracle teadm icertain uld ieara. 3 antinues teachers me Us requird: ks is probi eight week drool distrit y be the fa orchestrate Softball team sweeps two REDSTONE APARTMENTS 2 Bedroom 1 Bath Central A/H W/D Connections Drapes Refrigerator Range/Dishwasher Cable T.V. Houston dominated the final three quarters of the game before a sellout crowd after taking a second-quarter lead on a 20-foot Murphy jumpshot. Murphy put in at least eight 15-foot jumpers and sparked the Houston offense when it seemed to slow down with sloppy passing. Rookie forward Reggie Johnson kept the Spurs in the game, hit ting 25 points, and foward Mark Olberding backed him up with another 21 for San Antonio. Spurs’ guards James Silas and George Gervin appeared to have trouble moving the ball for the San Antonio backcourt, hitting only 2 of 14 shots between them in the first half. Houston went into the locker room at halftime leading 31-27. San Antonio tried to come back with Gervin and Olberding scor ing 8 and 6 points respectively and San Antonio came as close as one point, 105-106, with 3:42 left. The Spurs stayed within two until there were two minutes re maining in the game and Malone hit two baskets and two free throws, putting the Rockets ahead by seven. San Antonio came within three with 33 seconds remaining on a The Texas A&M women’s soft- ball team swept a double header from Cal State-Fullerton Tuesday night at Bee Creek Park by scores on 3-2 and 5-0. The sweep in creases the second-ranked Aggies to 31-5 for the spring. Lori Stoll, 16-2, was the win ning pitcher in the first game, in which the Aggies scored two runs in the fifth inning and one run in the sixth. Shannon Murray and Maria Resendez each had one RBI, while Resendez had two hits as well. The Aggies took a 3-0 lead into the seventh inning, when Cal- Fullerton scored two runs, but fell short in its effort to tie the game. In the second game, Shan McDonald, 16-3, pitched the shutout for the Aggies. Karen Guerrero hit a two-run home run and Rhonda Reese hit a triple in the fifth when the Aggies scored four of their five runs. Cal-Fullerton outhit A&M in both games six to five, but they also made three errors in each game while the Aggies made one in each contest.
