Academy Awards
United Press International
HOLLYWOOD — A con
valescing Ronald Reagan opened
the 53rd annual Academy Awards
to five rounds of applause for his
taped address, but top honors
went to “Ordinary People” as best
picture of 1980 and Henry Fonda
who received the first Oscar of his
46-year career.
Tuesday night’s program,
watched by an estimated 300 mil
lion television viewers in 66 coun
tries, kept East Coast viewers who
were determined to see the finish
up until 1:10 a.m. today.
In a bizarre occurrence, a tux-
edoed impostor stepped out of the
audience, accepted the Oscar for
the Hungarian winner of the best
animated short film, and fled. He
was being sought for theft.
“Ordinary People,” the story of
a middle-class couple and their
suicidal teen-ager, was the top
award winner, bringing in four of
the $500 gold statuettes. Actress
Lillian Gish, 84, came out of re
tirement to present the best pic
ture trophy.
It also won awards for best dire
ctor, Robert Redford; best sup
porting actor, Timothy Hutton,
son of the late actor Jim Hutton;
and best screenplay based on
material from another medium for
Alvin Sargent.
“Ordinary People” was Red-
ford’s first directing effort and the
20-year-old Hutton s first movie
role.
Robert De Niro won best actor
for his devastating performance as
boxer Jake Lamotta in “Raging
Bull.” De Niro previously had
been nominated for best actor for
his roles in “Taxi Driver” in 1976
and in “The Deer Hunter” in
1978. He won best supporting
actor in 1974 for his part in “The
Godfather Part II.”
Sissy Spacek won best actress
for her portrayal of singer Loretta
Lynn in “Coal Miner’s Daughter. ”
Spacek had been nominated for
the same award in 1976 for “Car
rie,” but lost to Faye Dunaway’s
“Network.”
Mary Steenburgen was chosen
best supporting actress for her
role as the feisty wife in “Melvin
and Howard.”
But the evening also belonged
to former actor Reagan, who
opened the show officially with
videotaped remarks, and received
five rounds of applause from the

State faced
with huge
budget cuts
United Press International
AUSTIN — Lt. Gov. Bill Hob
by told the Senate Finance Coin
mittee Tuesday it must make tht
“hard choices” to trim about $391
million from the proposed budget
for the next two years or face the
prospect of raising taxes.
Hobby outlined to the commit
tee members a list of “potential
reductions” in the Senate plan in
cluding $13.1 million cut from
Texas A&M University extensioa
services and $169.6 million in
proposed construction.
“You can trade off one hard
choice for another, but about $391
million in hard choices have to be
made, Hobby said.”
The lieutenant governor esti
mated total available revenue, by
the time the session draws to its
final days in late May, will be
$19,650 billion. He said the cur
rent spending bill totals $19
billion. In addition, Hobby said,
there are about $194.4 million
worthwhile potential additions to
the spending bill, plus pending
legislation involving another $192
million in new programs which
should be approved.
Hobby suggested deleting
million from the proposed Senate
appropriations for public educa
tion, $52.2 million from planned
spending for the Teacher Retire
ment System and $48.1 million
from junior college appropria
tions.
His suggested list of reductions
also included cuts in proposed
spending of $3.8 million from
selected agency programs,
million from higher education fa
culty salary increases, $14.7 mil
lion from Mental Health and Men
tal Retardation salary increases
and $25.1 million from state con
tributions for group insurance.
Hobby’s list of potential addi
tions to the Senate spending
included $43 million to expand
bilingual education programs to
all 12 grades in public schools in
compliance with a federal court
order.
