Tuesday night’s program, watched by an estimated 300 mil lion television viewers in 66 coun tries, kept East Coast viewers who were determined to see the finish up until 1:10 a.m. today. In a bizarre occurrence, a tux- edoed impostor stepped out of the audience, accepted the Oscar for the Hungarian winner of the best animated short film, and fled. He was being sought for theft. “Ordinary People,” the story of a middle-class couple and their suicidal teen-ager, was the top award winner, bringing in four of the $500 gold statuettes. Actress Lillian Gish, 84, came out of re tirement to present the best pic ture trophy. It also won awards for best dire ctor, Robert Redford; best sup porting actor, Timothy Hutton, son of the late actor Jim Hutton; and best screenplay based on material from another medium for Alvin Sargent. “Ordinary People” was Red- ford’s first directing effort and the 20-year-old Hutton s first movie role. Robert De Niro won best actor for his devastating performance as boxer Jake Lamotta in “Raging Bull.” De Niro previously had been nominated for best actor for his roles in “Taxi Driver” in 1976 and in “The Deer Hunter” in 1978. State faced with huge budget cuts United Press International AUSTIN — Lt. Gov. Bill Hob by told the Senate Finance Coin mittee Tuesday it must make tht “hard choices” to trim about $391 million from the proposed budget for the next two years or face the prospect of raising taxes. Hobby outlined to the commit tee members a list of “potential reductions” in the Senate plan in cluding $13.1 million cut from Texas A&M University extensioa services and $169.6 million in proposed construction. “You can trade off one hard choice for another, but about $391 million in hard choices have to be made, Hobby said.” The lieutenant governor esti mated total available revenue, by the time the session draws to its final days in late May, will be $19,650 billion. He said the cur rent spending bill totals $19 billion. In addition, Hobby said, there are about $194.4 million worthwhile potential additions to the spending bill, plus pending legislation involving another $192 million in new programs which should be approved. Hobby suggested deleting million from the proposed Senate appropriations for public educa tion, $52.2 million from planned spending for the Teacher Retire ment System and $48.1 million from junior college appropria tions. His suggested list of reductions also included cuts in proposed spending of $3.8 million from selected agency programs, million from higher education fa culty salary increases, $14.7 mil lion from Mental Health and Men tal Retardation salary increases and $25.1 million from state con tributions for group insurance.
