The packed chamber took on a solemn air as Speaker Bill Clayton called the joint session to order with three strikes of the gavel. The purpose of the session had changed considerably from its ori ginal purpose, Clayton said. Vice President George Bush had planned to address the Legisl- j ature about federal-state rela- I tions. The session unanimously adopted a resolution denouncing the attempt on Reagan’s life and expressing hope for the presi dent’s recovery. In his remarks. Gov. Bill Cle ments called the assassination attempt “a terrible thing.” “I know all of you are as con cerned as I am and the vice presi dent. The purpose of the meeting is to offer a prayer for the presi dent,” Clements said. “It’s a tragic thing in our coun try that we have people of unst able mind that create this sort of situation,” he said. “Let me apologize and tell you how sorry Vice President Bush is not to be with us. He has returned to Washington. He had looked for ward to being honored, but unfor tunately that’s not going to be the case.” Dr. Browning Ware, pastor of First Baptist Church of Austin, offered a short prayer to the group. “Eternal God, our father, you have gotten our attention through a tragedy in the nation,” Ware said. “Now we wait before thee. We ask for your healing mercy for our president, Ronald Reagan, and his associates.” '.at 1 p i" PrAlte; iid Hinckley arrested in October ur haircuts come with THAT PLACE II a guarantee. Rep. Bill Alexander, D-Ark., contacted for reaction to the Reagan shooting, said “my sources” told him of Hinckley’s arrest on Oct. 9. College 823-8051 United Press International DALLAS — On the window of one of the yellow wooden doors to Rocky’s Pawn Shop is a sticker that reads: “Guns don’t cause crime any more than flies cause gar bage.” It was at that pawn shop, in the middle of dozens of others like it on the same street where Presi dent John Kennedy was killed, that John Wamock Hinckley Jr. bought two .22-caliber revolvers known as “Saturday night spe cials” for $47 each last October. One of those guns was used Monday to shoot President Reagan and three other men. Rocky’s, located less than a half-mile from where Kennedy was killed nearly 18 years ago, was quiet Monday night. A Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms transaction record shows Hinckley was in the pawn shop, which advertises itself as a discount headquarters for police equipment, on Oct. 13, 1980. Pawnbroker Rocky Goldstein said he received a call from Washington asking him to check his records Monday afternoon. “I’m already getting phone calls from people saying they are gonna blow this place up because I sold the gun,” said Goldstein. “Did I wn the tying RBI. the winnin Francis ceived the know he was going to 4'Swanson, president?” ^ Swanson Authorities apparentlyW 0 the fill able to quickly trace the js jJ P- B^ cause it was new when flthree in tin Hinckley. am! two ru The document showsHEj nar( l (two showed a Texas driver’slic«» wrence ; identification, with his #P e Aggies listed as Lubbock and hiTs I lodde 1: 25.
