Collins, who said he has attended several hearings on the issue in Austin, said the 100 percent increase would affect all students, whether they were in state, out-of-state, or foreign students. But medical students would experience a 800 percent increase from $400 to $3,600 per scholastic semester. “We need to make an impression on these folks," Collins said, “we really need to get about a thousand letters to go to Austin.” In other action at the meeting, members voted to authorize the installation of glass-enclosed display cases in those halls which desired them. The cases, called “Wallpaper,” will display a collection of col lege related articles which will be changedeitl weeks. The display will also contain somesortolt tisement, RHA Adviser Nolen Mearssaid "All they’re asking for is our permission ton; the halls and advertise,” he said. The members also voted to impose a Slofei paid by each hall for the validation of studec cards for paid activity fees. RHA President Sherrie Balcar said that sinif 80 spaces were open to attend the presidents’m at Woodlake, Texas, new hall presidentsd; gates would receive priority. Ewing on the television show “Dallas” says he admires Carol Burnett for filing a libel suit against the National En quirer, but two Texas researchers say they don’t think the trial will hurt the tabloids’ sales. Larry Hagman left open the possibility he too may sue the su permarket tabloid, for a story printed at the height of the “Who Shot J.R?” hysteria. The cover story, about Hagman’s childhood, bore the headline, “He was a Real Stinker. Arrogant. Cruel. Twice as Mean and Rotten as J.R.” The article he objected to said, among other things, that as a youth Hagman enjoyed nailing wounded birds to trees. But Texas A&M University re searchers John Cook and Bill Strong say regardless of the ver dict in Burnett’s libel suit, the publication’s sales probably won’t suffer. They say their research indi cates that the Enquirer already had a negative credibility rating, at least among college-aged peo ple, before the trial began. Strong said most people are aware that gossip isn’t true, but they love to take part in it anyway. Such is the case with the National Enquirer, he said. Hagman had a few choice words of his own for the supe* tabloid. “They’re un scrupulous’j said. “They’re liars, thieves and they shoulll brought to justice just l| other criminal.” The tabloid later pi seven-paragraph retraction Hagman said was notenot: "I don’t think it was retraction,” he said in % day’s Dallas Morning Net [ think it was a rather skini| compared to the ami wrote about me.” By FR/ FULL OR PART TIME 'Day Shift ‘Night shift (til 10pm.) ‘Weekends ‘Flexible hours to fit your schedule ‘Rapid advancement ‘Cashier experience helpful Starting Salary $3.50/hour Apply in person only. 9:30-11:30am. Ernesto Martinez may now car ry passengers in his two flashy Model A Fords between Lubbock International Airport and the city under an exception to a new ordi nance covering taxicabs and limousines. The Lubbock City Council, with the blessings of officials of a competing cab company, mod ified a requirement that limousines must carry at least four passengers, thereby permitting Martinez to continue operating so long as he uses antique vehicles. As proposed, the ordinance would have excluded the Fords because they can carry only three passengers — one in the front and two in the rumble seat. “We can live with it,” Mar tinez’s attorney, Pat Abeyta, said of the council’s decision. Martinez got into the business by accident. People kept asking him for rides in his Model A. He recognized an opportunity to get into a line of work he enjoyed. So, six months ago he added a second Model A, applied to City Hall for a permit to limousine service ing rides in his vintage marff Everything worked finei: ly.
