I i Page 8 THE BATTALION WEDNESDAY, MARCH 25, 1981 s Third version of shooting introduced in Daniel case 1 United Press International LIBERTY — An emergency medical technician testified Tues day that Vickie Daniel told him the shooting of her husband, for mer Texas House Speaker Price Daniel Jr., was an accident and that she only intended to scare him with the rifle used to kill him. The testimony by Liberty fire department employee Oscar Can tu was the third version of the shooting that witnesses have testi fied that Mrs. Daniel gave to ex plain the death. Mrs. Daniel herself has testi fied she killed her husband in self defense, and could only remem ber firing a warning shot, not the fatal one. Her ex-husband has tes tified that Mrs. Daniels told him she tripped and the gun went off. Cantu, one of the first to arrive at the Daniels’ ranch-style home Easy access to inhalants discouraged United Press International AUSTIN — A Houston woman said Tuesday the easy availability of toxic inhalants has turned her 17-year-old son from a “law-abiding Christian” to a man with no values. Pilar Garcia urged the Senate Jurisprudence Committee to approve a bill by Sen. Bob Vale, D-San Antonio, requiring that toxic inhalants contain additives to discourage inhalation. She also supported a bill by Vale removing the accessibility of spray paints and other inhalants by requiring store employees to handle the products before they are sold to minors. Garcia said her son has sniffed silver spray paint for three years and it has changed him dramatic ally. “It has changed him from a fine young man to a man who has no values — who has dropped out of school and does nothing,” she said. “I raised my son to be a law- abiding young man, a Christian. It has changed his life and ours, too. ” Father Dermot Brosnan, dire ctor of a San Ajitonio drug abuse treatment center, -the Patrician Movement, said abuse of toxic in halants has blossomed into a se rious problem in a relatively short time. Brosnan said his center treated 2,380 cases in 1975, but in 1980 the center reported about 4,000 cases. George Solis, representing the Harris County Juvenile Probation Department in Houston, said the department has about 300 toxic in halant cases yearly. “The abuse of chemicals not only hurts children physically but leads to other criminal activity,” Solis said. “When they get high on inhalants, they say Y like to drive.’ If they don’t have a car, they’ll steal a car.” Vale’s bill requiring an additive be contained in volatile chemicals was referred to a subcommittee. His bill making it a criminal offense to sell certain glues or spray paints to minors was re ported out of committee favor ably. ‘Sex’ tapes deleted from info hotline United Press International DALLAS — It seems the Baylor University Center medical information hotline has proved a bit too popular with area young people. The hotline, called Tel Med, amounted to a mini medical school, offering information on 300 diseases. Anyone with a medical question could dial Tel Med’s number, pick a problem ranging from “Otoplasty-The Cor rection of Prominent Ears” to “What Is a Normal Bowel?” and request by number whatever tape-recorded program the caller wanted to hear. Unfortunately, most of the peo ple calling weren’t interested in the cure for gout or the proper use of laxatives. Instead, giggling young clients kept calling and asking for number 174, titled “Masturbation.” Fol lowing close behind 174 in popu larity were 1050, “Male Sexual Response,” and 898, “Female Sexual Response.” The popularity of the sex tapes proved to be a bit embarrassing for Baylor officials, who preferred that the public listen to the cure for canker sores. After number 174 became a hot item among Dallas-area children, upset parents began telephoning to complain and the tapes were removed. However, Baylor offi cials say they may be returned in less titillating form in the future. the night of the shooting, said that while Mrs. Daniel was being transported by ambulance to a hospital he asked her what had happened. “She said they had an argument and he went upstairs to get some pot or something,” Cantu testi fied. “(She said) she went to get a gun to scare him and he (Daniel) said ‘oh no.’ She said it went off; it was an accident.” Cantu said that after the medics found Daniel’s body, he went to check on Mrs, Daniel, who was huddled in a comer in the front of the house. “She looked frightened but was not crying or hysterical,” Cantu testified. “She asked how he was. I didn’t answer. She got hysterical.” her what happened. “She said she had shot him,” he said. The custody case, brought by Daniel’s sister, has centered Daniel is fighting for custod around the shooting, and Mrs. her two children by Daniel He said Mrs. Daniel started to lunge at him but he grabbed her hand and both ended up on the floor. Mrs. Daniel was thrashing around he said, hitting her head against the floor and trying to bite and scratch him until a fellow medic helped him quiet her down. Cantu testified Mrs. Daniel calmed down in the ambulance but began crying when he asked BUSINESS WEEK 1981 Visiting Executive Panel: "Employment Opportunities in Operations Management, Management Information Systems, and Business Logistics" Tuesday, March 30 - 9:30am Rudder Tower, room 701 AU!
