All applications must be filed with the Student Financial Aid Office not later than 5:00 p.m. March 2, 1981. LATE APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. 78t3i Rominger said the state could go to federal court over the issue. “We will do whatever we can to get the Texas order rescinded, ” he said, “including taking legal action if necessary.” Texas imports about $100 mil lion worth of California fruits and vegetables each year and the cost of treating the produce for grow ers would be in excess of $1 mil lion, department officials esti mated. On Tuesday, Texas Agriculture Commissioner Reagan Brown announced that fumigation of California produce would begin March 1. He also noted that Cali fornia requires fumigation of Texas shipments going into Cali fornia because of the Mexican fruit fly. In response, Assemblyman John Thurman, chairman of the Assembly Agriculture Commit tee, said of Texas’ action: “This is nothing but a retaliatory thing on California growers because the federal Department of Agricul ture has them quarantined in the lower Rio Grande Valley. “Fumigation would have to be done in California and would have to have a certificate on it. The Mediterranean fruit fly has never been found anywhere in Califor nia but in a small part of the Santa Clara Valley.” Thurman, D-Modesto, noted that Florida agriculture officials apparently have dropped plans to ban imports of California fruit af ter inspecting the eradication program in the valley. “When the Floridapeo out here a few weeks agotk<| were very impressed with ourerJ dication efforts,” he said.‘Ty gave us a clean bill of health.
