Spud needed the extra inches, too. They pushed him from 4-foot- 11, as of last June, to 5-foot-4. Yet he dunks with style, occassionally plays the low post and has been known to stuff the shots of 6-foot-8 opponents. The crowd loves it. Last year Webb, who weighs 125 pounds, was a junior varsity guard for Wilmer-Hutchins High School, located outside Dallas. During the summer he grew, worked hard on strengthening his legs and discovered he could dunk. “I figured it was time I started growing,” he said. The result was amazing and opponents can’t help but ask — often in mid-game — how he does it. ‘T tell them it’s a secret,” Webb said. “Sometimes they just stare at me. I can tell they are surprised by the way they holler. “I’ve put a lot of hard work into this. I run a mile each day and go up and down the bleachers 20 or 25 times and practice jumping af ter I run.” Wilmer-Hutchins Coach Hom er Smith says Webb isn’t fast but still manages to drive the lane and take on forwards and centers, dou ble pumping and getting his shot off on the way down or drawing a foul. His high game was 39 points this year and he’s scored 20 or more in all but three games this season for his 22-8 team. North Garland forward Joe Walters recently found out about Webb. With the game tied in the third quarter, Walters was on his way to a breakaway layup. As he jumped. Spud came from behind and blocked the shot. The ball rol led away. Walters is 6-foot-8. Earlier in the year Wilmer- Hutchins was playing state- ranked Fort Worth Dunbar on the road before a big crowd. Dunbar’s all-state forward, Wille Ashley, worked his way to a violent two- handed dunk and the crowd went wild. Spud, standing at midcourt, grabbed the ensuing long in bounds pass, drove ahead, soared, arched his back and stuffedkl dunk of his own in retaliatioj “The place went crazy,” 5| said. “I could hardly keep I from coming onto the coni knew then that we had a sp| player.” Webb’s mother started him “Spud when hewasy reference to Sputnik, the Rt satellite. The Thursday match was play ed in beautiful weather in San Antonio but was marred by the conduct of the Trinity fans. “In all my 23 years of coaching,” said Aggie coach David Kent, “I have never seen such a bad talking group of fans.” Kent said the fans disrupted the match by screaming obscenties at the Aggie players in the middle of points. “Don’t get me wrong,” said Kent. “We were beaten soundly. Trinity has a much better team than we do and we have no ex cuse. He said he believes the team will bounce back, though. “We weren’t prepared for the crowd,” he said. “That’s my fault. ” Aggies take on SFA Trinity simply got the breaks.
