Out of the blue THE BATTALION Page 9 MONDAY, FEBRUARY 16, 1981 Tennis team remains unbeaten The giant’s awake Once upon a time ... in a land not so far away, a sleeping giant finally awoke ... The giant had been accidentally put to sleep by his mentor. Magical (call me Merlin) Metcalf, who had been experimenting with various, new formulas. The formula he was searching for was the one that would give the giant the crown of the tiny kingdom of Speegl- land. One of the formulas the giant drank during one of the parties of yuletide, was a sleeping potion. Very promptly, he fell asleep among all the merriment and partying of the new year. Darkness descended upon the castle of Jolly Roily, the home of the giant. All the serfs and followers were in despair trying to find ways to awaken the giant. Once they learned the giant was soundly asleep, all his enemies began to laugh and kick him while he was down. At first they were wary of a trap and sneaked upon the slumbering form so as not to awaken him. Soon they learned they were in no danger and they began to slam dunk, fast break, wheel and deal upon the giant. They had a good time. All the while, Magical (call me Merlin) Metcalf was trying to remember the antidote for his formula. He tried all kinds of things — different formulas, new incentives and even a little bloodletting but nothing seemed to work. First to kick the downed giant were the funny frogs of the “Killer. ” Then the Red Pirates from the dusty wastelands laid the giant low. The birds from bird-brain city flew in to Jolly Roily and cruised out with another feather for the nest. After a few more matches, all the groups in the tiny kingdom were jumping at the chance to come to Jolly Roily castle to joust and try their stuff. It seemed as if all was lost. Gambling “lucky” Lewis was ready to win it all with his hit man, Rob “the sting” Williams. The evil Duke Sutton of Mutton was laughing grimly at the plight of the giant as he came up with plan to beat “lucky” and the rest of the groups and swipe the crown of the tiny kingdom. The crown of Speeglland went to the survivor of the most match es. The giant had won the crown a year ago as he had cut a swath through all his enemies. He had seemed invincible wielding his favorite weapon, a piece of his magical Wall. But the giant was asleep and nothing could help him. Just when all seemed lost for the giant, Magical Metcalf came up with a formula he had seemed to have forgotten. It was an old one using two parts to three. He had little to lose so he tried it. At first, the giant only stirred. With another dose, the giant moaned and moved but did not awaken. Finally, with time running out, Magical (call me Merlin) gave it his best effort ever. And the giant awoke. The loyal legions of serfs and minions of the giant sighed with relief. They had screamed and yelled with each match trying to awaken the slumbering form. Finally, he was awake and the loyal followers were ready to be led. He flexed his muscles and stretched and finally regained the form he had lost when he had been asleep. The sleeping giant had awakened ... and once he had finally stirred, the race for the crown was thrown into the air. But is the giant too far down to recover? What of the evil plans of the Duke Sutton? And what of Sour Lemons, the lead singer in the new wave group Bevo, who threatens to take over the kingdom? The answers to all the questions lie in the riddles of San Antone for all those who are brave enough to seek them. By RICK STOLLE Battalion Stall The Texas A&M University men’s tennis team continued its winning ways over the weekend as the Ags swept past both Stephen F. Austin University and the University of Southwest Louisiana at the Omar Smith Tennis Center. The Ags defeated SFA 8-1 Friday in an easy win but was challenged Saturday against USL before taking a 6-3 victory. After splitting the singles matches against USL, the Ags came on strong to win all three doubles. “The number one doubles match was the best match I have seen in years,” said coach David Kent. “Brian Joelson and Reid Freeman were down 4-0 in the first set but came back to take it, 7-5. It was absolutely a super effort.” Kent said he was pleased with his team’s effort and the fan support. The support from the rest of the team and the home crowd was the deciding differ ence, he said. In singles: Joelson defeated Tora Yonozewa 5-7, 6-2, 6-2; Freeman lost to Terek Elsakka 6-3, 6-3; Trey Schutz was beaten by Jim Price of USL 6-3, 6-3; Tom Judson defeated Vaughn Bryan 6-4, 6-2 and Leonard Smith beat Spike Jopiti 6-2, 1-6, 6-1. “Leonard Smith had a great singles victory,” said Kent. “He is doing exceptionally well for a freshman.” In doubles: Joelson-Freeman defeated Yonozewa- Elsakka 7-5, 6-3; Judson-Ron Kowal beat Jim Bous- tany-Jopiti 6-2, 1-6, 6-1 and Schutz-Jim Grubert de feated Bryan-Price 6-4, 6-4. “Joelson and Judson were super with double wins Saturday,” said Kent. They won in both the singles and doubles matches they played. The Ags raised their record to 5-0. USL dropped to 3-2. The men’s team will take on the University of Washington Wednesday at the Omar Smith Tennis Center at 1:30. On Thursday, the Ags travel to San Antonio to take on ninth-rated Trinity in the first major test for the Ags of the young spring season. Kent said Washington is very good and the Ags cannot be caught looking towards the Trinity match. They are in a tough conference, he said, that has six top 20 teams in it. Texas A&M and Trinity have developed an in tense rivalry since they began playing matches three years ago. “We really look forward to playing them each year,” said Kent.
