COBOL developer to speak tonight The inventor of one of the most widely-used computer languages will speak at Texas A&M University tonight at 6:30. Navy Capt. Grace Murray Hop per, developer of the Common Busi ness Oriented Language, COBOL, will attend an informal faculty and student reception from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. in room 145 MSC. Shortly after she joined the Navy in 1945, Hopper began working with the first computer, designed in WWII. In 1949, she became a re serve Navy officer and while working for Sperry Univac , she developed COBOL in the mid-1950s. Recalled to active duty in 1967, Hopper, 74, is reputed to be the second-oldest living naval officer# active duty. She works at the Nan Data Automation Commandii Washington D.C. Poll shows opposition to desegregation plan United Press International BATON ROUGE, La. — A news paper poll shows nearly half of the people familiar with a proposed de segregation plan for East Baton Rouge Parish public schools believe it will lower educational standards. Brady and Associates of Baton Rouge contacted 434 registered vo ters in a Sunday Advocate telephone poll to determine the extent of public awareness of the school desegrega tion plan and attitudes about it. Marshal’s Serviceiii the Southern District of Texas in i spot that already is sore. The backlog of fugitive warrants# growing, but the number of sworn deputies to serve the warrants has decreased by one-fourth during the last several years. Southern District officials had hoped to hire five more deputies this year, including one for Brownsville but the president’s freeze on hiring all but dashed hopes of filling the jobs. The Southern District, a triangle that extends from Houston, to Brownsville to Laredo, has a particu larly high fugitive rate because of its rural and urban makeup and its pro ximity to the Mexican border, said Thomas Kupferer, chief of enforce ment operations for the U.S. Mar shal’s office. “We have 232 people in Brown; sville that we are actively seeking, Kupferer said. “Three-quarters of them probably are not in Texas orthe United States.” M Rollr
