The Cougars, now 14-3 on the season, equalled their total win number for last year. The also moved into a first place tie in the Southwest Conference with Baylor. Houston led at the half27-20. The Cougars shot just 37 percent from the field, TCU just 25. UH jumped out to a 10-2 lead, with 13:54 left. TCU ran off six straight points to move within two at 12:19. Larry Mecheaux and Clyde Drexler then sparked a Cougar surge. Drexler and Michael Young, Houston’s two freshman forwards, had seven points at intermission. Young finished with 15 points, while Drexler had 11. Larry Frevert and Jeff Baker each scored 14 for TCU. TEXAS 75, BAYLOR 70 AUSTIN — The Texas Longhorns used 26 points and 15 rebounds by LaSalle Tliompson to upset the Baylor Bears 75-70 Saturday, hand ing the Bears their first Southwest Conference loss of the year. Texas, which led by as many as 20 points in the second half, held off a late Baylor rally to drop the Bears to 5-1 in SWC play and 10-6 overall. The Longhorns, who entered the game in last place in the league, increased their record to 2-4 and 7-9 overall. Texas used a 13-4 spurt midway through the first half to hold a 38-25 halftime lead. The Longhorns increased their advantage to 20 points, 55-35, at 11:40 of the second half. However, Thompson picked up his fourth foul at 10:34 and was benched for three minutes, allowing Baylor to come back. The Bears rallied to within five points at 65-60 wih 1:45 to play in the game but could get no closer. Texas out-rebounded Baylor 37-30 to control the game and give the Longhorns their first win since Jan. 12. The loss snapped Baylor’s six-game winning streak. Joe Copeland led Baylor with 22 points and Pat Nunley added 18. Texas held the Bear’s leading scorer, Terry Teagle, to 16 points, including only four points in the first half. It was the first time in the season that Teagle was not the Bears’ leading scorer. Texas also was led in scoring by Virdell Howland’s 16 points and Mike Wackers 10. RICE 60, SMU 59 DALLAS — Robert Shaw scored 20 points to lead the Rice Owls from an 18-point deficit to a 60-59 victory over SMU Saturday. Team members Shelley Carbone, Michon Breisacher, Tracy Johnston and Philis Burns set the record dur ing the meet. Overall, the Owls won the dual meet 77.5-71.5, capturing the event with a win in the last relay event. Rice also won the men’s meet, BB SS. The men’s and women’s swim teams met strong opposition from the University of Houston here on Saturday, with the men losing 88-32 to the Cougars and the women 89- 42. Coach Mel Nash said the perform ances by the young team over the weekend were excellent and that he is pleased with the performances so far. The swim team goes up against Southwest Texas State University this coming weekend. On Feb. 7 the team travels to Lubbock to meet with Texas Tech.
