By VENITA McCELLON Battalion Reporter Marjorie Peregoy’s job catalo guing periodicals at the Sterling C. Evans Library doesn’t limit her hob bies to the latest best-sellers. She collects Star Trek memorabilia. Her collection includes books, photographs, articles, posters, fan zines, children’s records, tape re cordings of episodes, copies of shooting scripts, a tribble and some tribble food, a Spock ear, a Star Trek lollipop, and a breakfast tray bearing the likenesses of the crew of the USS Enterprise. The Star Trek series, which ori ginally aired from 1966-69, picked up a large following of fans that has grown in size and enthusiasm to cult-like proportions. The fans, known as Trekkies, collect items re lated to the series, attend conven tions of fans and faithfully watch re runs of the series. The enthusiasm for the series used to be limited to teen-agers and college students who were often thought of as screaming groupies. Peregoy’s slightly graying, blonde hair indicates that she doesn’t fall into the category of the young, screaming groupie. Pere goy, however, rates herself as a Trekker, a more serious collector and fan. She called herself middle- aged, but said that this fact doesn’t limit her participation in her hobby. “I used to sneak around to buy the fanzines so people wouldn’t see me,” Peregoy said. The Star Trek following has broadened in the past few year, she said. “There’s not a particular age group dominating at conventions,” she said. “There are 7-year olds to 80-year olds. Most appear to be col lege student age.” The Peregoy collection began during her days as a graduate stu dent at Louisiana State University. Her roommate, an avid fan at the time, started to write Star Trek stor ies, a practice taken up by many of the fans. Peregoy started to collect these stories, which were ex changed on a circuit. Peregoy described how she saw the phenomenon grow after the NBC series was taken off the air and went into reruns. “I think there are people who are fanatic fans who weren’t even born in 1967,” she said. "It unleashed a lot of creativity in people. If you met somebody and you found they were interested in Star Trek too, then you had something in common.” The enthusiasm for the series was an emotional crutch for some, Peregoy said, because of the fear during the beginning of the Cold War in the 50s and the political ac tions of the 60s. “Fans found that this was an alternative to going on drugs or jumping off a building, or maybe just straight entertainment,” she said. Fans became so involved in the characterization of the series that the show became real to them. Peregoy, who said that Spock was her favorite Star Trek charac ter, has portions of her collection in her home. Although she said her collection isn’t worth a lot of money in individual pieces, she keeps other parts in storage for safety.
