Doctor free on lot

United Press International
AUSTIN — The Texas Supreme
Court ordered the release from jail
Wednesday of a psychologist who re
fused to answer questions stemming
from a civil damage suit concerning
sexual contact with his patients.
Dr. John M. Abell, who faces suits
by two former patients seeking $4.7
million in damages, was arrested
Monday and placed in the Travis
County Jail on a contempt of court
order for refusing to answer ques
tions put to him more than two years
ago as part of the pre-trial proceed
ings in the civil suits.
Polly Durham and Carolyn Craig
filed separate suits against Abell
seeking $2.2 million and $2.5 million
in damages respectively, alleging
Abell had taken advantage of them
during the course of their therapy,
and had engaged in sexual inter
course with them in his office.
Craig’s suit contends Abell con

office, then he fondled her and en

began each of her sessions with inter
course, she said in the suit.
She also contended the psycholog

Decision uphelii
to revoke license
United Press International
AUSTIN — The Texas Supreme
Court Wednesday upheld a decision
by the Texas State Board of Medical
Examiners to revoke the license of a
Brownsville physician.
Dr. John Amos Conley had
appealed to the court, contending
the board had improperly revoked
his license.
The license was revoked by the
board on two grounds: That Conley
had rendered obstetrical care to a
patient in a non-therapeutic manner,
and that he had been suspended
from the staff of Brownsville Medical
Center for unprofessional conduct or
incompetence likely to harm the
public.
Records in the case show Conley
