Dr. John M. Abell, who faces suits by two former patients seeking $4.7 million in damages, was arrested Monday and placed in the Travis County Jail on a contempt of court order for refusing to answer ques tions put to him more than two years ago as part of the pre-trial proceed ings in the civil suits. Polly Durham and Carolyn Craig filed separate suits against Abell seeking $2.2 million and $2.5 million in damages respectively, alleging Abell had taken advantage of them during the course of their therapy, and had engaged in sexual inter course with them in his office. Craig’s suit contends Abell con vinced her to lie on the floor of his office, then he fondled her and en gaged in intercourse. After that, he began each of her sessions with inter course, she said in the suit. Dr. John Amos Conley had appealed to the court, contending the board had improperly revoked his license. The license was revoked by the board on two grounds: That Conley had rendered obstetrical care to a patient in a non-therapeutic manner, and that he had been suspended from the staff of Brownsville Medical Center for unprofessional conduct or incompetence likely to harm the public. Records in the case show Conley admitted Mrs. Nora Poi hospital Sept. 22,1977, a woman was in labor whej admitted.
