I should say there’ll be a good iver.” ese comments came Tuesday, days after the women’s vol- all team had returned home Baton Rouge, where they lost of three matches in the regional offs to eliminate them from con- ion for any national laurels. Not Condon expected to make the mals. Her team has played er- :ally all season, compiling an all 23-31 record. At times, the oted young team played up to its mtial, knocking off some of the 'erences top teams, such as Lamar and Texas Tech. But inex perience overcame raw talent many times, and the Aggies lost several close matches to older teams such as Houston, Texas and UT-Arlington. In Baton Rouge, the Ags lost to UT and to Tech, a team they had topped just two weeks before at the state championship here in College Station. Finally, the Ags scored their lone win over lowly North Texas State, for what Condon said seemed like the hundredth time this season. Houston won the tournament with a victory over UT-Arlington in the final. Both teams qualified for the national tournament Dec. 9-12 in Santa Barbara, Cal. Actually, the season is not quite over. The Aggies will also compete in the Southwest Conference Invita tional in Lubbock Dec. 5-6, but Con don says the competition serves merely as a tuneup tournament for the Cougars and Yellowjackets. After that, the squad will take a two-month break, returning for offseason com petition in the United States Vol leyball Association’s league. Condon says she has four scholar ships to fill and that her selection process will be highly competitive. “I’m going to look for height, but I just want to get the best athletes,” she said. “I really want aggressive girls, someone who gets mad when they’re down, someone with the de sire to win.” Landry still happy over game United Press International DALLAS — Looking back to one of the worst Cowboy performances of the season, Dallas head coach Tom Landry could still find aspects of the 14-10 win over Washington to praise. “We didn’t have a penalty in the entire game,” Landry said Tuesday. “Now that’s something. You know if you look hard enough, you can al ways find something good.” Actually, Landry had plenty of good things to say about some units of the team, mainly the play of the Cowboy defensive and specialty team squads. “Ed Jones had probably his best game of the year. Harvey Martin played well. And of course, so did the galloping ghost,” Landry said of defensive lineman Larry Cole, who grabbed a pass from Washington’s Mike Kruczek and ran 43 yards for the Cowboys’ second touchdown. “Randy White (who hit Kruczek to jar the ball loose) made the play to give Cole the ball. White made a great play,” Landry said. The addition of James Jones to the Cowboys’ kick return units has work ed favorably all year. Jones is averag ing 23.2 yards per kickoff return for the season. James Jones, Ed Jones, Cole and Robert Newhouse received game balls for their contributions Sunday. “(James) Jones has made the kick returning teams much stronger,” Landry said. “He runs mainly north and south and not east and west and gives us generally good field posi tion.” jttt ; v t 11 w □ n nn) i 3.—-I.. 1.
