By KURT ALLEN Battalion Staff “When it comes to playing Texas, it doesn’t matter what the record is — we are going to compete. ” With that single remark, Texas Aggie Head Coach Tom Wilson sum med up the feelings of his team as it charges through the end of 1980 and on into the future. As Wilson continued his weekly talk with writers, it became obvious that he already is treating the pre sent as the future in his efforts to put Texas A&M back on the win ning track for next year. A big help has been switching to the split back or veer offense. Wilson made the change because he felt Texas A&M’s personnel were more suited to the new formation. So far, he has been pleased by the results of the TCU game. “Since we’ll be a split back team next year, I decided to go ahead and start with it now,” said Wilson. “Basically, we were limited to only four plays. Yet, we managed to con trol the ball and ran 81 plays in the game. “I am pleased at how we control led the ball and had no exchange fumbles. That had been my one wor ry. At the same time, I was very disappointed at our point produc tion. We should have scored more touchdowns.” Now a centerpiece of the Aggie offense, tailback Johnny Hector got used to the veer quickly and gained a career-high 191 yards on 37 carries against the Frogs. Wilson noted Hector has matured as a back this season and his stamina has also im proved. “I think the weather being much cooler has helped him consider ably,” said Wilson. “It doesn’t take as much oxygen for him to keep going. He’s also doing things he wasn’t doing earlier like, instead of dancing in the hole, he’s running north and south and breaking tackles. I feel Hector is close to becoming a com plete back.” Another area which has Wilson ex cited is the progress of the kicking game, despite Alan Smith’s blocked field goal attempt. Wilson noted Smith had failed to get the ball off of the tee quick enough. “One of the hardest things to do is convince a group of people about the importance of the kicking game,” he said. “Our advantage next year will be having the same people doing the kicking game and they should be come one of our strengths.” As for Texas, Wilson pointed out the Longhorns have a very strong defense with linebackers as big as anybody in the country. He added the Horns are strong enough up front to play man to man in the secondary and get away with it. Offensively, Wilson noted that Texas has had problems with its running backs, forcing the team to throw more lately. However, quar terback Donnie Little continues to present problems. t campus« le Bruce aii m Texas AM luroftliek®' irt of townt re, I’ll prob ain, it i AGGIES! I also think (Rick) Mclvor is a fine passer which gives them a good one-two punch.” The UT-A&M game is always an intense affair and there’s the risk that players may be too keyed up before the contest. But Wilson said he pre fers his team be as high emotionally as possible. Regarding rumors he may be re placed, Wilson said the only thing he’s worried about is going to Austin, beating Texas and then recruiting on the road. “I’m sure my name will be brought up at the regents’ meeting,” said Wilson. “It always is. If it (being re placed) happens, I think it would be a great injustice. Right now I’m just looking at the future, but if that’s taken away from me, there’s not much I can do about it.” TAKES A LITTLE LONGER" AGENT AERO AIR FREIGHT SERVICES WE DO MORE THAN DELIVER YOUR PACKAGE OVERNIGHT WE GUARANTEE IT! 150 CITIES $22.11 UP TO 2 LBS.
