It's called the Nuclear Propulsion Officer Candidate — Collegiate Program (NUPOC-C for short) and if you qualify, you can earn as much as $840 a month right through your senior year. Then after 16 weeks of Officer Candidate School, you'll receive an additional year of advanced technical education. This would cost you thousands of $$$$ in a civilian school, but in the Navy, we pay you. And at the end of the year of training, you'll receive a $3,000 cash bonus. It isn't easy. There are fewer than 400 openings and only one of every six applicants will be selected. But if you make it, you'll have qualified for an, elite engineering training job program. With unequaled hands-on responsibility, a $32,000 salary in four years, and gilt-edged qualifications for jobs in private industry should you decide to leave the Navy later. (But we don't think you’ll want to). Stop by the MSC and meet the Navy Officer Programs team Nov. 18, 19, 20 or contact Lieutenant Mysllwy Navy Recruiting Station Sunnyland Shopping Center, Bryan, TX 77801, (713) 822-5221. RE WARD. 696-2822. 54t7 411 Texas Ave. College Station Across from Ramada Inn (Closed on Mondays) State Mafia touched by law United Press International LOS ANGELES — The prosecutor in the trial of five reputed West Coast Mafia leaders says their convictions on charges of racketeering and extortion show the Mafia is not beyond the reach of the law, “This case has destroyed the myth that the Mafia cannot be success fully prosecuted,” Jim Henderson, head ofthe Organized CrimeStrile Force in Los Angeles, said after the convictions. He further hailed the convictions as a warning “message to all people in organized crime.” All five defendants, allegedly leaders of the Southern Califomii Mafia, were convicted on rackeetering charges involving attempts to extort money from gamblers, bookmakers and pornographers. Two of the defendants also were convicted of extorting $7,500 from an FBI undercover sting operation. However, three of the defendants, charged with plotting to murder Frank “The Bomp” Bompensiero, the San Diego mob chief who was fatally shot near a telephone booth in 1977, were acquitted on those charges. All five defendants — Dominick Brooklier, 66, identified in testi mony as boss of the Los Angeles family of La Cosa Nostra; Samuel Sciortino, 61, an alleged underboss; Louis Tom Dragna, 60, areputd one-time acting boss; Michael Rizzitello, 53, a mob “capo” or lieute nant; and Jack LoCicero, 68, a mob “consigliere,” or counsellor- stood silently as the verdicts were read. Several members of their families sat rigidly in the front rowofthe courtroom. Some of the wives wept. The jurors reached the verdicts Friday evening after eight days of deliberation. Testimony lasted three weeks in the trial hailed by law enforcement officers as the most significant judicial crackdown on the Mafia’s activities in many years. The defendants will remain free on bail pending sentencing Jan. 12 before U.S. District Judge Terry Hatter Jr. Surrogate mother fee under $10,000 United Press International LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Dr. Richard Levin, physician for the Illi nois woman who recently bore a child for a Louisville couple, says the surrogate mother was paid less than $10,000 under a legal contract. “She received subtantially less than $10,000,” Levin told a news conference, “And I received no fee for this case whatsoever. The surrogate mother, who used the pseudonym Elizabeth Kane, gave birth to an 8-pound, 10-ounce, 20-inch boy at Louisville’s Audubon Hospital a week from last Sunday. The birth — the first in the nation in which the surrogate mother was paid — was kept secret until it leaked out Thursday night. Kane answered a news advertise ment a year ago seeking a woman to carry a child, at a fee, for a Louisville couple unable to conceive because the wife was infertile because of blocked tubes. The surrogate was impregnated by artificial insemina tion with the husband’s sperm. The identity of the couple was also withheld. Though Levin, president of Surro gate Parenting Associates Inc., per formed this surrogate parenting case free of charge, he said other such packages will cost childless couples over $20,000, which incl and medical fees. Since March 2, Dr. Levin between 12 and 15 Louisville womei have become surrogate mother! I* couples who have chosen this chi bearing alternative. “That’s the name of the gamei surrogating: We’ve given peopli another choice in parenting," Lem said. "It’s a viable alternative," Kane, 38, who has three othti children, was to attend the with Levin but decided to retumli her Illinois home. “I couldn’t convince hertocom, Levin said. “She was just getti homesick and drove back Friday Levin said the delivery tookpla eight months and seven days ah Kane’s first insemination. 3-year-old clings to after plunge AGIO INSURANCE FOR AGGIES: v | Call: George Webb Farmers Insurance Group 13400 S.
