Not Robert Campbell, a sopho more bio-medical science major at Texas A&M University. Campbell, a Houston native, heard about the Macho Man Contest at Zacharias Greenhouse from his sister and a friend and decided to enter. “My sister said there’ll be free drinks, you’ll be surrounded by pret ty girls, and there’s a chance you might win 50 bucks,” Campbell said. “Then Exxon came calling and l had an awful big bill to pay, so I guess the 50 bucks finalized my de cision to enter.” Last month Zacharias Green house had its first Macho Man Con test, and they will have another con test tonight (Nov. 6) at 8 p.m. Ten men — ranging in occupa tion from a construction worker to a jockey, and in size from 6 feet 1 inch and 230 pounds to 5 foot 5 inches and 130 pounds — will compete in the male beauty contest. They will compete for various titles such as best hair, best legs, best chest, best personality, and last, but not least, Mr. Macho. Gregg Andrews, a bartender at Zacharias who is organizing this month’s contest, said the idea of having a macho contest was just a joke, but some women who heard the discussion took them seriously and kept asking when it was going to be. "It started getting a lot of atten tion,” Andrews said, "so we de cided to set a date. We weren’t even planning to do any advertising until about a week before, but when that week before came, the place was already full. We took reservations.” Andrews said the women went wild. “There was a complete variety of girls there,” he said. “Everything from the little Southern goody, goody girls, to housewives, to lots of young single women. Lots and lots of them got really snookered. “I had a blast watching them go crazy; it kind of lets you know they’re not any different than you are.” Andrews said a second contest was not originally planned, but women customers demanded it. The men will come out in their nice clothes first, and then Andrews, who is also the emcee for the contest, will read their hobbies, interests, and goals in life. Next, they will come out in their shorts or bathing suit. Andrews said a couple of them will dance, but most will stand there and answer questions. “I was a little disappointed.” Campbell said. “It seems like every one got risque questions but me. I think the girls were looking for someone who could get up there and ham it up. “I never thought of myself as that confident or macho; I think I’m just more of a nut. I hadn’t done any thing looney all semester, so why not? ” Is there a possibility that College Station might soon have a La Zachs? Andrews said he didn’t think so. “I think a male dancer club would make it in College Station, but we’re going to stay the same type of club that we are. We’ll probably continue to have contests every month.’’ itiyirdlay MORNING 11:00 0 2 COUNTRY KIDSWORLD Topics: a kid who travels with the Shrine Circus, a look at moon rock and NASA Moon Rock Laboratory, pick-up-the- litter party, DIAL H.IS.D Home work Hotline, soaring a new sport, a feature on champion ship baton twirlers, fun and facts at Astroworld, feature ride “Gunslinger,” and a discusiion about the volunteers that are needed for the Christmas party for the handicapped.
