Ag expert: eat on $130 monthly new way ^ to save By DAWN SCOTTE FERGUSON Battalion Reporter With rising food costs, for some students on a limited budget the closest thing they get to a well-balanced meal may be a package of Twinkies and a glass of grape Kool-aid. But Dr. Rose Tindall Postel, a food and nutrition specialist with the Texas Agriculture Extension Service, said a student with $130 per month for food can eat well through careful planning and common sense. Two things that will help are planning a menu and making a shop ping list, Postel said. “But,” she warned, “be flexible with your list in case you find any unadvertised specials.” Postel said one way to save money is to share food with others. “Buying in large quantities is cheaper and there are not so many leftovers or wastage,” she said. People can also save money by buying meat at butcher shops instead of pre-packaged meat, Postel said. However, she said students need to consider time and transportation costs on their shopping trip. “People are better off to do all of their shopping at a large supermar ket because they have a large selection,” she said. “Frozen foods are expensive,” Postel said, “and if you buy them, buy the store brand even though it doesn’t have a pretty package. ” Generic (no-label) products can be good buys, she said, but students should compare the weight and quality of a generic product to a name brand item before buying. Some other factors Postel said students should consider include their schedules, storage space, and possible savings through coupons out of newspapers and magazines. She said students should also watch code dating on perishable products like milk to ensure freshness. Contrary to popular belief, Postel said, it’s not always more econo mical to cook from scratch. “It depends on how much you cook, how much you eat and how much time and energy is used. “Whatever you do,” Postel said, “don’t go to the grocery store hungry. ... You’ll either buy everything you see or forget things on your list.” ym< jmt. >ae« name ms*.. >m< xhbk: ss»ee vM&mx TENDER LOVING CARE! For Your Thesis or Dissertation of a Lifetime.
