GLIDER LESSONS \
WANTED
United Press International
DALLAS—‘This is a dream job. Literally. It’s a highly specialiJ
position for those who have trouble staying awake on the job.
The major requirements are that you be able to sleep between9i;
and 5 p.m. and not be too shy to slumber in front of a crowd.
Robin Sachs, director of public relations at the Dallas Healtlu|
Science Museum, is looking for the sleepers lor a unique multi-util 1
portrait of a sleeper.
Sachs said applicants should not be taking drugs and be interesteii
the process of dreaming. The museum will pay, through a grant
the Hoffman LaRoche pharmaceutical firm, $150 a week forpeoplt
sleep in a public exhibit in the museum. Museum patrons will have:
opportunity to observe the human body at rest and, by eli
attached to the sleepers, to witness patterns of brain activity di
sleep and dreaming.
The exhibit is called “Dreamstage — An Experimental Portiai
the Sleeping Brain” and will run from Nov. 15 trough Feb. 1,
The exhibit is piimarily the work of Dr. Allan Hobson, head
psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and a leading dream and
researcher, Sachs said. Previous exhibits were held in Boston*
Seattle.
Also involved in the presentation of the exhibit are Ted Spaghm
photographer involved in time-lapse photography of the ballet of sl«
Paul Earls, a laser scientist, and Ragnild Karlstrom, an artist of new
al landscapes — pictures drawn from cell and brain activity.
“It is really more of an educational exhibit than an experinw
one,” Sachs said.
The museum will divide the exhibit into two sections, one lights
one dark. In the light section will be conventional presentation!
sleep theories and dream research, she said. The dark section will he
a black room, the center of which will contain a dimly lit one-way gh
sleeping chamber.
“We will have black throw pillows for people to relax on and Ml
the sleeper. In the pillows will be transmitters which will broada
dream experiences we have compiled," she said.
Electrodes attached to the sleeper will give a constant monitoring;
rapid eye movement — the period of sleep when dreams occur-c
other physiological activities. Brain signals through the electrodes»:
be translated and projected by colored laser beams for the differti
levels of sleep. Finally, Sachs said, the electrodes will he hookedup
trigger different musical notes, producing a symphony of sleep
accompany the physical ballet.
How has the response to the museum’s small classified adinll
Dallas Morning News seeking sleep participants?

AUSTIN — Railroad Commis
sioner Jim Nugent said today the Rail
Act of 1980 approved Wednesday by
Congress will allow railroads to make
almost unchecked increases in the
rates charged Texas utility com
panies for hauling coal from Wyom
ing and Montana to Texas.
“More and more, coal is firing the
boilers in the state’s electrical
plants,” Nugent told a news confer
ence.

“As the cost of moving that coal
increases without reasonable limits
or review, so too will your utility bill.
And we have no choice in the matter.
Federal law and rising costs require
that we stop using natural gas as a
boiler fuel. ”
Nugent said Burlington North
ern’s “furiously rising rates” for haul
ing coal to San Antonio have
attracted considerable public atten
tion, but he said at least six Texas
utilitiess serving more than 130
“Under the Staggers Act, tl
roads will increase rates more
with fewer opportunities to ]
and appeal them,” he said,
confident that the impact one*
these electricity markets will
into tens of millions of dollarsdi
this decade.
Nugent said the Railroad Co®
sion has the option of accepting?
fication to administer the rail
within Texas, or to leave thatat
nistration to the Interstate 0
merce Commission.
“If we are to be reduced toern
runners for the ICC, I have ft
doubts about the continuing id
state rail regulation,” he said.
Railroad Commission was est
lished in the last century to end
the kind of rate discrimination
shipper preference that this
opens the door to.
