It’s a highly specialiJ position for those who have trouble staying awake on the job. The major requirements are that you be able to sleep between9i; and 5 p.m. and not be too shy to slumber in front of a crowd. Robin Sachs, director of public relations at the Dallas Healtlu| Science Museum, is looking for the sleepers lor a unique multi-util 1 portrait of a sleeper. Sachs said applicants should not be taking drugs and be interesteii the process of dreaming. The museum will pay, through a grant the Hoffman LaRoche pharmaceutical firm, $150 a week forpeoplt sleep in a public exhibit in the museum. Museum patrons will have: opportunity to observe the human body at rest and, by eli attached to the sleepers, to witness patterns of brain activity di sleep and dreaming. The exhibit is called “Dreamstage — An Experimental Portiai the Sleeping Brain” and will run from Nov. 15 trough Feb. 1, The exhibit is piimarily the work of Dr. Allan Hobson, head psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and a leading dream and researcher, Sachs said. Previous exhibits were held in Boston* Seattle. Also involved in the presentation of the exhibit are Ted Spaghm photographer involved in time-lapse photography of the ballet of sl« Paul Earls, a laser scientist, and Ragnild Karlstrom, an artist of new al landscapes — pictures drawn from cell and brain activity. “It is really more of an educational exhibit than an experinw one,” Sachs said. The museum will divide the exhibit into two sections, one lights one dark. In the light section will be conventional presentation! sleep theories and dream research, she said. The dark section will he a black room, the center of which will contain a dimly lit one-way gh sleeping chamber. “We will have black throw pillows for people to relax on and Ml the sleeper. In the pillows will be transmitters which will broada dream experiences we have compiled," she said. Electrodes attached to the sleeper will give a constant monitoring; rapid eye movement — the period of sleep when dreams occur-c other physiological activities. Brain signals through the electrodes»: be translated and projected by colored laser beams for the differti levels of sleep. Finally, Sachs said, the electrodes will he hookedup trigger different musical notes, producing a symphony of sleep accompany the physical ballet.
