The lockers are being converted to a free token system because many users were taking advantage of the service by using the lockers all the time instead of just when shopping at the bookstore, Howard Dehart, bookstore manager, said. “The lockers are for bookstore shoppers and bookstore shoppers only,” said Dehart. Lockers on the first floor are ready for use, Dehart said, and the ones in the basement should be ready by fall. “We have to change the working t “ziiRBORNE"! The com pany supplying the new lock mechanisms can’t supply enough to fit the 700 lockers at once, he said. Before the change, the lockers worked on quarters. When users in serted a quarter, the key was re leased. When the key was replaced, the quarter was returned. “A lot of students would put their quarter back in and keep the key,” Dehart said. Some students used the lockers for extended periods, in some cases all semester. The tokens should help restrict locker use, Dehart said. “Ifwe have an individual that com es in on a regular basis to get tokens, we know something’s up,” Dehart said. At one time, Dehart said, lockers were checked, and a note was made of their contents. A week later, they were checked again, and most still had the same items in them. Any items left in the lockers after 5 p.m. are removed, Dehart said, and must be reclaimed inside the book store. A $2 fine is charged, also. Nothing has been found in the lockers since the token system went into operation, Dehart said. Quarter-size metal tokens are available at the service center inside the entrance to the bookstore. These tokens take the place of the quarter, but are not returned to the user, De hart said. Response to the new plan has been good. “We had many complaints ab out the lockers being constantly busy,” Dehart said. “We’d have sev eral hundred lockers being occu pied.” Now, he said, lockers are always available, and there have been no problems with people “living out of the lockers.” Books, packs and satchels are not allowed in the bookstore to prevent theft. Dehart said he has an office full of such items confiscated from peo ple who tried to walk out with book store merchandise. Also, students who buy books at the basement bookstore and re-enter the store to look for other books might possibly be charged again for the books they have already purch ased, he said. But those who leave their books out in the open run a risk of having them stolen. “Theft got so bad over the years that the lockers were pro vided,” Dehart said. Rental lockers are available by semester in MSC basement. Large lockers are $6, medium are $3.40 and small are $2. A $5 key deposit is required. what’s up WEDNESDAY TAMU SPORTS CAR CLUB: Will have a general meeting at 7:30 p.m. in Rudder Tower.
