Students had called for a nation wide strike by black workers to re member the more than 600 victims of the Soweto riots and vowed to go on with demonstrations despite a government ban on meetings of more than 10 people for the rest of June. Johannesburg police, who re ported the policeman killed in Cape town, said the stay-away was heavy in the Capetown area but less effec tive in Durban and Johannesburg. A police spokesman said the police tried to keep a low profile in the face DIETING? ?ven though we do not prescribe diets, we make\ \t possible for many to enjoy a nutritious meal\ ’hile they follow their doctor 9 s orders. OPEN Monday through Friday 10:45 AM-1:45 PM QUALITY FIRST of the demonstrations, but would not tolerate any officers being killed. On Sunday, riot police fired tear gas and charged into the crowds with batons to break up a peaceful prayer meeting of 300 students in the park ing lot of Soweto’s largest church, Regina Mundi. Several people were arrested. Police also fired tear gas canisters into a crowd of foreign journalists and television camera crews who watched the meeting. The government Friday vowed it would not tolerate anarchy in con nection with the June 16 anniversary of Soweto. Police Minister Louis Le Grange said his men would move in on June 16 or any other day to pro tect the state’s security. But students vowed to go ahead with memorial services in defiance of the emergency government ban, and police braced themselves for con frontations with blacks, mulattos and Indians. Pamphlets circulated throughout black townships in the country’s urban centers ordered black workers to stay home. “All the workers should observe and keep this day — June 16 — re vered,” one pamphlet said. “Don’t sacrifice your life for a day’s pay. No one is going to work on Monday June 16 or else. “Be warned. Warn your neighbor. Do not test the people’s patience for it is not endless.” AUTO INSURANCE FOR AGGIES: Call: George Webb Farmers insurance Group 3400 S. I63t2 United Press International AUSTIN — District Attorney Ronald Earle said Monday he will fight any move to allow Don Yar brough, former State Supreme Court justice convicted of perjury, to leave the country unless the ex judge puts up a cash bond guaran teeing he will serve a prison sent ence. Yarbrough is seeking permission to go to the Bahamas, where he said he hopes to study medicine while his case is appealed. “He can go to witch doctor school as far as I’m concerned as long as it doesn’t cost the taxpayers anything to extradite him if he decided to skip out,” Earle said. Yarbrough’s appeal is expected to be heard by the Texas Court of Cri minal Appeals this fall. The personal bond, however, does not require a defen dant to actually put up any money. “Somebody needs to find out how much it costs to extradite a defen dant,” Earle said. “We would want him to put up an amount that would cover the costs of extradition in case he runs.” Yarbrough’s lawyer, former Attor ney General Waggoner Carr, announced earlier this month the former justice wants to study medi cine in the Caribbean in an attempt “to get the threads of his life together. ” Under terms of his conviction he must have the permission of District Judge Mace B. Thurman to leave the country. The judge customarily con sults the local district attorney on such matters. Yarbrough was found guilty of lying to the Travis County grand jury about meeting with a business Asso ciate at an Austin motel to forge a car title and discuss a plot to murder a business foe. Yarbrough was elected to the state’s highest court in a 1976 sur prise upset. A relative unknown, Yarbrough’s victory was generally credited to the similarity of his name to that of Don Yarborough, another Houston attorney who twice ran for governor.
