Page 8 THE BATTALION THURSDAY, JUNE 12, 1980 Ex-Aggie Godine is picked by Bullets by RICHARD OLIVER Sports Editor The Texas A&M University bas ketball history book opened to year 1978 Tuesday when ex-Aggie star Karl Godine was selected in the seventh round of the National Bas ketball Association’s college draft. Godine was selected by the Washington Bullets as the 13th pick of that round. Godine, who gradu ated from Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches this year, was a point guard for the 1975 Texas A&M S WC championship-winning team. Godine averaged 17 points a game for SFA this season. In 1975, Godine averaged 12.6 points per game for Texas A&M and scored 24 points with 10 rebounds in a key game against Texas. Midway through his freshman sea son, however, Godine and fellow team member Jarvis Williams were accused in a letter by then Texas head basketball coach Leon Black of accepting illegal recruiting induce ments from Texas A&M. Williams and Godine, both from Houston Kashmere, were given a one-year suspension by the SWC. The pair resumed playing for the Aggies in 1977. Unfortunately, Godine injured his knee against Baylor that season and had to under go surgery. His unfortunate career at Texas A&M ended in June, 1978 when Godine announced he was transfer ring to Stephen F. Austin Universi ty, an NAIA school. Godine, who at the time had only one year of eligibility remaining with the Aggies, was able to play two more years with SFA under NAIA rules. At the time of Godine’s departure, Aggie coach Shelby Metcalf said, “I think that two years more than dou bles his chances of playing pro ball and that is something Karl should really strive for.” Godine has now reached that plateau. “I haven’t seen him play in two years,” Metcalf said Tuesday, “but he’s a good shooter. Apparently, his knee is well now. “His freshman year with us was his best. He and Jarvis both started and we won the championship.” SFA basketball coach Harry Mil ler said Godine was a better player this season than when he first attended SFA. “He had a good year,” he said. “He scored a lot. He’s a good one-on- one player. “This year he did a lot better job of accepting a team concept. He was playing more as an individual (his first season). This year he averaged about 17 points a game, whereas last year he was up over 20 points a game. He was more of a team mem ber this year.” Neither coach would comment on Godine’s chances in the pros. “I haven’t seen him in two years,” said Metcalf, “so Tm not really qual ified to say what he’ll do in the pros. I certainly hope he makes it. I wish him the best of luck. ” Miller is more specific. “When you’re drafted in the seventh round,” he said, “well ... I don’t know.” SMU tennis coach McLain quits -ashinct Supreme ( misms may decision leals ruling; Lg” bacterii [he court’s o iact on the p iVor genes Biew drugs come as Mting for t terium was loever inve :hine, mam useful imp slender; compositio THE DIFFICULT WE DO MEDIATELY, THE INTO TAKES A LITTLE LONGER" United Press International DALLAS — Bill McClain Wednesday resigned as head men’s tennis coach of Southern Methodist University after a three-year tenure which included two Southwest Con ference championships. He compiled a 56-24 dual match record in his three seasons at SMU, leading the Mustangs to SWC titles in 1978 and 1979 and a third-place finish this spring. His 1978 squad finished 3rd in the NCAA championships and his 1979 team finished 4th nationally. “Bill McClain has served SMU well in his three years here,” said athletic director Russ Potts. “We wish him every success in the fu ture.” Officials said McClain had been talking for some time about leaving SMU. Potts indicated the search for McClain’s replacement will begin immediately. “SMU has long been regarded as one of the Southwest’s finest tennis powers. We intend to remain so.” McClain’s wife said her husband was leaving town Wednesday even ing and probably would not be back until Friday, but she said he would not have a comment for several days about where he plans to coach next. Karl Godine, shown here in 1977 playing for Texas A&M University against SMU, was drafted Tuesday by the Washington Bullets in the 7th round of the NBA college draft. Godine played for the Aggies in 1975 and 1977 before transfer ring to Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches.
