Hot S ummer Day 9
pea t for car races
by RICHARD OLIVER
Sports Editor
Everyone was a winner Sunday at
Hot Summer Day Autocross
^enges. There was good food,
pod friends, and oh yes, a little car
jyjng, too.
fte autocross, sponsored by the
US a&M University Sports Car
U and held at the Olsen Field
irking lot, attracted some 40-50
aectators. Following the racing, a
pjbecue was held.
Of the eight categories racing, A-
itock racer Mike Holmgreen posted
die best mark of the day with a
104.40 time.
Hie autocross track took up all of
aiepart of the Olsen Field parking
dt 50 pylons are set up, and the
Burse is plotted with long sweeping
ones similar to a race track. It is
fliroximately half a mile in length.
Each autocross, however, is de
nned differently. Some courses are
luch tighter than others, and others
wser.
The racers run through the course
tree on each try, and they race indi-
ndually against a competitor’s time.

HOUSTON — Denny Walling’s
[hits in two games means nothing

the plate the next three games,
dhe knows it.
He also likes it that way.
"We have so much talent on this
am that you can’t expect to be in
elineup if you don’t hit — for even
short time,” Walling says.
The strong left-handed hitter cur-
itly is spraying line drives almost
erytime at bat, and he expects to
art every game in which a right-
mded pitcher opposes the Astros.
If you mess up three, or four or
redays, it would probably be time
rareplacement,” he added.
Walling’s use at first base in place
the slumping Art Howe is just one
ample of manager Bill Virdon’s un
rated movement of his regulars, a
fey that has irked a few players

and Monday Ken Forsch, Randy

bined to limit the Cubs to five hits.
Forsch, 7-4, pitched hitless ball
for five innings but said he was not
surprised when Virdon made a quick
decision to relieve him after he gave
up three hits in the sixth inning.
“No, I wasn’t surprised. When Bill
makes up his mind to take you out,
there’s no conversation. Once he hits
the chalk line on his way to the
mound, you’re out of the ball game,
Forsch said.
Virdon said he relieved Forsch be
cause, “I just didn’t think that he was
throwing well,” but catcher Alan
Ashby said the manager strives to
give the often-injured Forsch rest
whenever he can.
“The timing was right to take Ken
ny out,” Ashby said. “Bill said at the
time, and I don’t think there’s any
thing wrong with me repeating it,
that we’ve got a little lead and things
look good to get him out of here and
give him some rest for his next start.
