Page 8 THE BATTALION WEDNESDAY, MAY 28, 1980 Women’s softball team places 3rd by RICHARD OLIVER Sports Editor The Texas A&M University women s softball team lost two heart- breakers, 1-0 each, in the AIAW Na tional Championships last weekend to finish third in the nation. The Aggies, who entered the tour nament as the No. 1 seed, won their first game over Southwest Missouri State, 1-0, but lost in the second round, 1-0, to Indiana University. The loss forced them into the loser’s bracket. The Ags won four straight games to advance to the finals of the loser’s bracket, where they lost once again by a 1-0 score to eventual national champion Utah State. In that game, Aggie hurler Lori Stoll lost her first game since mid-March. All seven games the Aggies played in the tournament were decided by one run, and five of those were de cided by a 1-0 score. For coach Bill Galloway, the loss to Utah State marked the end of a season coaching what he calls the greatest team he’s ever been associ ated with. For the players, the loss was a frus trating end to a season in which they had climbed to a No. 1 ranking while amassing 67 wins against 14 losses during the year (40-7 in the spring). Last season, the Aggies finished fifth in the nation, and this year’s third-ranked team lost only one play er to graduation. The closest game in the tourna ment was the Cal-Poly at Pamona- Texas A&M game in the loser’s bracket. The 11-inning game was won by the Aggies in the bottom of the last inning, 3-2, when Nancy Sullivan drove in the winning run with a sing le. Earlier, she had sent the game into extra innings by knocking in the tying run in the sixth inning. “Lori Stoll went the distance for us,” said Galloway. “It was a good game because they (Cal-Poly) had the bases loaded about six times with only either none or one out, and they couldn’t score against us.” The Aggies finished the season with a 72-16 record. Lori Stoll, who was selected to the AIAW all tournament team, finished with a 35- 6 record, and Shan McDonald finished 29-9. Despite the success of the past two seasons, Galloway is reluctant to point to a national championship for next year. “That (the championship) remains to be seen,” he said. “We lost only one player to graduation, so ... Galloway is not reluctant So about this season, however. “It’s been just a fantastic he said. “We finished 72-16, phenomenal. This is the gn team I’ve ever been associ with. ” WTSUinfractions found; conference penalties given Texas A&M first baseman Nancy Sullivan swings at a pitch against Oklahoma State during the regional tournament the Aggies hosted April 30-May 2 at Bee Creek Park. The football and bas ketball teams will not be permitted to play post-season games that year, and the university will not share in any basketball revenue generated by the conference. The school’s grants-in-aid for 1981-82 will be reduced by two, to 13, the conference said. A conference spokesman said West Texas State also would be re quired to forfeit “a large numl its victories in various the 1978-79 school yearbi eligible players were sports) used. “The conference found II Texas State University’s i procedures to be deficient,! investigation conducted I office uncovered a significan her of eligibility violations," MVC Commissioner Davidf Aggie golf, track teams active despite vacation Although most Texas A&M Uni versity athletic teams have gone home to try and recover from their respective seasons, some athletes are still competing.
