Wright, a three-year letterman from Dallas Roosevelt, was voted the team’s outstanding player by the members of the 1980 Southwest Conference-champion Aggie team. He was given the award by Coach Shelby Metcalf. Wright, a junior, was the second- leading scorer on the Aggie team with a 14.1 point-per-game average, and he averaged over seven re bounds per game. He was an All- SWC selection on a team that posted a school best 26-8 record and adv anced all the way to the NCAA Mid west Regional tournament before losing in overtime to the eventual national champions, Louisville. Wright was a first-team SWC selection by the Associated Press and United Press International, The Dal las Morning News, the Dallas Times- Herald and Texas Sports Magazine. He was also an all-tournament player at the Pillsbury Classic in Minneso ta, the Runnin’ Rebel Classic in Las Vegas and the SWC Post-Season Classic in San Antonio. Metcalf also announced Wright and Vernon Smith will be co captains of the 1980-81 team. Texas A&M University will play Arkansas at 8 p.m. Aggie coach Tom Chandler has scheduled a four-game series against Texas Wesleyan College May 11-12, with a double-header on both days. Texas Wesleyan is ranked seventh in the nation among NAIA teams, and should provide the Aggies some good warm-up for the SWC tourna ment. Tickets for the May 16-18 SWC tournament are on sale now. In a news conference Wednesday at Cain Hall on the Texas A&M cam pus, the Bryan-College Station Chamber of Commerce announced the mayors of the twin cities have named next week, May 11-18 Tour nament Week in honor of the tourna ment. JOHN *JUS ~ PUN® COffttA -wo—.FRVOSCOWXA American Gigolo Astros down Expos 8-4 United Press International Jose Cruz drove in four runs and Joe Niekro tossed a seven- hitter in Montreal Tuesday to lead the Houston Astros to an 8-4 victory over the Expos in a game delayed by rain for three hours and 50 minutes. In Arlington, Doc Medich tos sed a six-hitter and won his eighth straight game over the Boston Red Sox in pitching the Texas Rangers to a 7-2 triumph. The Astros jumped on starter Ross Grimsley, 1-2, for five runs in the first inning. Rafael Land- estoy led off with a double, Terry Puhl singled and Joe Morgan was safe on a fielder’s choice to load the bases. Cesar Cedeno, who la ter left the game with a wrenched back, singled home the first run and Enos Cabell doubled home two more. Cruz followed with a two-run single. After a rain delay in the sixth, Niekro, who raised his record to 4-1 in completing his fourth game of the season, gave up two runs on a passed ball and a sacrifice fly by Valentine in the sixth, and Mon treal got its last run in the ninth. The victory gave Houston a 6-2 record on their current two-week road trip. In the Ranger victory, Medich, 2-0, struck out seven and did not walk a batter in registering his second complete game in as many starts. The Rangers, trailing 2-1, scored four runs in the sixth in ning to knock out loser Bruce Hurst, 2-1. Singles by Al Oliver and Buddy Bell, a two-run double by Billy Sample and an RBI single by Pat Putnam knocked out Hurst and Jim Sundberg greeted reliev er Dick Drago with an RBI single. Boston took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on Dwight Evans’ homer and an RBI single by Rick Burleson, but Texas reduced the deficit to 2-1 in the fourth when Richie Zisk singled home Oliver. The Rangers added a run in the seventh on Bell’s RBI single and pushed across another run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Bump Wills.
