Much of the blame, at least in post-game discussions, landed on Mets relief pitcher Neil Allen, 0-3, who issued a one-out walk to Cesar Cedeno, then watched Alan Ashby double to put runners on second and third. Art Howe was intentionally walked to load the bases before Leonard delivered his shot off the right-center field fence. “He wasn’t very good today,” Mets mananger Joe Torre said of Allen, “but he will be. His control trouble is a tempor ary thing. He’s a gutty pitcher who should become a good reliever.” The kindest words came from Ashby, who noted, “He has as good a curve ball as anyone in the National League.” Ashby was Houston’s fire power Sunday, staking the Astros to a 2-0 lead off starter Ray Burris, driv ing in Cedeno with a third inning double and then hitting his first home run of the season with two out in the fifth. He attributed his on-the- money play to his return to switch- hitting. “I don’t feel anything like I did last year,” when he had given up switch- hitting, the catcher said. “Last sea son, lefthanders got me out so easily that I couldn’t hit righthanders, and struggled all year.” “Despite two different minor in juries, a bad toe and tendonitis in his right knee, “I’ve got to where I’m running on the side of my foot pretty easily. The biggest problem is pick ing up my legs and to do the catcher’s job.” Ashby speculated a bit on the Astros’ pitching staff, saying every one can’t be expected to be strong all the time. “They (the Mets) pretty much saw what we have to offer this weekend,” he said. ★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★*★★ BJ THOMAS CONCERT BRYAN CIVIC AUDITORIUM THURSDAY MAY 1 TWO PERFORMANCES Tickets $5.00 $6.50 PM and 9 PM $8.50 ON SALE AT MSC Box Office Bank of A&M City National Bank First Bank & Trust University Nat’l Bank * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Gary Brendel, 21, a bio-engineer graduate student, Saturday’s TAMU marathon in his wheelchair. Kicks in the Grass The ball was all over the field and so were the players during the Lone Starred versus Harlequins soccer game. The AB corec game was a run-kick game, although a few players also headed the ball and managed a few body catches. The score belies the action as each team drove the ball to their respective goals for attempts at scoring. The defense was tough on both sides and the ball was effec tively kept out of the goalie’s box. During the first half, the Harle quins managed to fake the Lone Starred’s goalie to one side and pass off to score before he could reach the opposite side. It was the only score of the game. The second half was a more rough and tumble game as players became over zealous and crowded the ball. The ball made its share of trips up and down the field, but the goalies were alert and just as quick as the forwards. The game ended 1-0 for the Harlequins.
