Harrison Schmitt, R-N.M., charged Thursday. Schmitt said 127 surplus two- and four-engine cargo planes have been identified by drug enforcement agents as part of the dope-smuggling fleet used between South and Cen tral America and the southern Un ited States. Schmitt said the most recent air craft sale was last week. He said he was not accusing the Pentagon of helping drug dealers, but that sales to middlemen, who in turn sell the planes to smugglers, should be stopped. Schmitt and Sen. Dennis DeCon- cini, D-Ariz., questioned presiden tial drug abuse adviser Lee Dogoloff at a hearing on the White House budget. Both took issue with DogolofFs claim that the administration has had some success in keeping heroin out of the country. Dogoloff cited as evidence an esti mated reduction from 500,000 to 380,000 in the number of heroin addicts. He said there has been an 80 percent reduction in three years in the number of heroin overdose deaths. But DeConcini said he had seen figures indicating there are still ab out 500,000 addicts and that during the same period, use of cocaine has soared. He said there has been a lack of coordination between the Customs Service and the Drug Enforcement Agency. Witnesses before other committees have testified smuggling is “out of hand” in south Florida where “the stuff is just floating up on the beaches,” he said. Dogoloff said he would investigate Schmitt’s information about the use of surplus military planes. 25# * 9. £ ACHARIAS GREEN HOUSE! CLUB & GAME PARLOR 1201 Hwy. 30 (in the Brlarwood Apts.)
