Page 10 THE BATTALION TUESDAY, MARCH 25, 1980 ageje 6 Women tracksters win three sports ol< Crazy ★ Fla ★ Te By CAROL HANCOCK Campus Staff The Texas A&M Women’s track team managed to avoid the scuffles during the Texas Southern Universi ty Relays and take top honors in three events Friday and Saturday. In the Aggies’ first outdoor meet of the year, while TSU and Prairie View argued over the results of a relay, senior Iris Tipton stayed con sistent with her past performances and dominated the shotput with a throw of 44-ll 1 /2. High jumper Jan Chesbro won first place in her event, clearing the bar at 5-6. Sandra Brown brought in the only first place in the running events in the 3,000-meter run. Brown set a school record with her time of 9:58.3 then turned around to place third in the 1500-meter run. Lorie Scott placed third in the 3,000, ten seconds after Brown. The field events proved to be the strong point of the Texas A&M team, as Coach Bill Nix predicted. Addi tional points from the field came from Paula Lake’s third place in the longjump, Karen Morgan’s third in the javelin and Vickilee Cobern’s fourth place in the discus. The sprinters did indeed have a tough time in the sprint-oriented meet and failed to score any points except in the 1,600-meter and the 3,200-meter relays. The argument between Prairie View and TSU resulted in a shoving match among officials and partici pants with Aggies staying clear of the fracas. But one person has insisted all season it wasn’t so. That was Darrell Griffith. Griffith did score 23 points to lead the Cardinals to a 59-54 victory over UCLA in the NCAA championship finals Monday night, to end the Bruins’ Cinderella season almost at the stroke of midnight at Market Square Arena. But it was Griffith, the tourna ment MVP, who insisted the title winning game was a team effort — as the entire 33-3 championship season had been. “Like I’ve said before, this team is not just Darrell Griffith. It was an all-out team effort,” said the 6-foot-4 senior, the school’s all-time leading scorer. It was Griffith’s 18-foot jumper that put Louisville ahead to stay, 56- 54, with 2:21 left. But it was also the shooting of the “other” guard, Jerry Eaves, the rebounding of freshman Rodney McCray and the free-throw shooting of Derek Smith in the clos ing minutes that also helped insure the victory. Louisville scored the game’s last nine points as UCLA, which shot a poor 36.5 percent from the field from the game, saw shot after shot go awry. UCLA, fourth-place finisher in the Pacific-10, completed its season 22-10. UCLA led at halftime, 28-26. Sophomore Muylyn Hooten returns a shot in actionearlieri season. Hooten is currently ranked number two on theTrl A&M’s women’s tennis team. staff photo by Roy LtscW Women s soccer wins again; face Longhorns this weekend By MIKE BURRICHTER Sports Editor The defending state champion Texas A&M women’s soccer team defeated Sam Houston State Univer sity Saturday to maintain its undefe ated status this season. But Aggie coach Alan Heath was not too pleased with his team’s perform ance. "Boy they stunk,” Heath said of the Bearkats. “We stunk less, that’s all." Carol Sullivan, an inside forward, scored both Aggie goals in the first half, booting her first from just inside the penalty area and tallying her second on a penalty kick. The other inside forward, Sandra McMaster, scored the second half s lone goal as the two teams engaged in a defensive battle. “We had some excellent defensive play,’ Heath said. “Adele Fairman, our center fullback, played a really good game. That really accounted for our shutout.” Heath said the team was looking ALTERATIONS IN THE GRAND TRADITION OF OLD TEXAS WHERE MOTHER TAUGHT DAUGHTER THE FINE ART OF SEWING — SO HELEN MARIE TAUGHT EDITH MARIE THE SECRETS OF SEWING AND ALTERATIONS "DON'T GIVE UP — WFLL MAKE IT FIT!" "I’ve been in many heated argu ments with their coach, Debbie Robertson. She’s really abrasive and carries no respect for any of the other teams. And she certainly has no re spect for any of the other coaches. "We just went to Huntsville this weekend to go through the motions. It was like a practice. Everyone was thinking about Texas, so we just practiced our Texas game strategy over there.” The victory Saturday pushed the By Nj Aggie season record to 2-C Ags have beaten Southwest State Uni\ ersity and tiedStepl Austin this season.
