This last time they played, they beat Baylor by 38, Lasalle Thompson and Fred Carson are in their first year, but three games from now they’ll be sopho mores so you really can’t call them freshmen anymore.” Baxter has had mixed feelings ab out his last season. “It’s been a lot harder on me since we have all of these young players on the team,” he said. “But by working harder, I’ve been having more fun. You can’t take anything for granted this year. But the freshmen have really progressed. They’re not like freshmen, they’re like second-year men already.” Thompson will get a chance to progress some more this Saturday when he lines up against Rudy Woods at center. The Ags plan to start in a man-to-man defense, Met calf said, with Dave Goff covering th other freshman, Fred Carson; Ver non Smith on Henry Johnson and, according to Metcalfs plans David Britton and Rynn Wright will alter nate on Baxter and John Danks. United Press International ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — For mer New Mexico head basketball coach Norm Ellenberger has been charged by a federal grand jury with fraudulently scheming to obtain eli gibility for two basketball players through counterfeit transcripts. Ellenberger, who was fired after the scandal broke at the beginning of the basketball season, and former UNM assistant coach John Whise- nant, who resigned after the 1978- 1979 season to enter private busi ness, were arraigned before a U.S. magistrate Thursday. U.S. Attorney R.E. Thompson said Thursday another former assis tant of Ellenberger, Manny Gold stein, was expected to plead guilty to felony charges that would be filed by Thompson’s office in the near future. The sports scandal has been under investigation by the federal grand jury for two months, and numerous • other investigations of the universi ty’s athletic program are in progress. The federal indictment charges Ellenberger and Whisenant with four counts of mail fraud in what Thompson said was a scheme to en sure the eligibility of former player Andre Logan. Ellenberger also was charged with mail fraud, wire fraud and causing a bribe to be paid to employees of Ox nard Junior College in California in his alleged efforts to obtain eligibility for Craig Gilbert. Thompson said the Logan case in volved a scheme to defraud UNM, the Western Athletic Conference and the NCAA by counterfeiting a transcript to make it appear the play er had higher grades and earned more credits than he actually re ceived from Mercer County Com munity College in Trenton, N.J. As part of the scheme, the indict ment said, printer William Blackstad used a seal to make the transcript appear official and signed the name of the Mercer College registrar to the false transcript. Logan played for New Mexico in the 1978-1979 season but was de clared ineligible with the other play ers early this season. In the Gilbert case, the indict ment alleged Goldstein prepared “a counterfeit and spurious transcript from Mercer Community College, when in fact Craig Gilbert had never attended Mercer.” Move block denied United Press International LOS ANGELES — The city’s chief negotiator in its attempts to lure the Oakland Raiders to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum said Wednesday the owner of the San Diego Chargers was attempting to block the move by being a “hatchet man” for the NFL.* u, .i .vs Coliseum Commissioner William Robertson told reporters at a hastily called news conference that pub lished statements, attributed to Chargers’ owner Eugene Klein, were “totally irresponsible and total ly inacurrate.” Klein was quoted Tuesday as saying part of a $17 million package offered to the Raiders for stadium construction costs and movement of the team was $2 million to build a Beverly Hills home for Raiders’ man aging general partner, Al Davis. “He (Davis) never even indicated he will move here,” Robertson said. The victory was the first ever for the Knicks in San Antonio, and it dropped San Antonio into third place in the central division, a half game behind the Houston Rockets. The Rockets were 122-117 victors over the Knicks Wednesday. Knight hit 16 of 21 field goal attempts and finished with game highs of 32 points and nine re- bounds. The Knicks’ front line of Knight, center Cartwright (13 of 20) and for ward Joe Meriweather (8 of 10) com bined to hit 37 of 51 from the floor. Knight’s 15-foot jumper with 1:50 re maining tied the game at 122-122. The Knicks took advantage of poor defensive strategy by the Spurs to put the final points on the board. Meriweather twice refused layups to run the clock down, and Cart wright hit a 15-footer with 10 seconds remaining to provide the four-point victory margin.
