Klump, a self-educated mechanic, [has devised what he calls a perfect oil filter — a roll of household toilet pa per. ‘‘True filtration is removing the smallest known particles out of the engine’s oil, otherwise you have to jjrain it,” he said. “Nothing cleans better than toilet paper, i, "If you keep oil 100 percent clean, why throw it away? Oil doesn’t wear out — it just gets dirty.’’ Klump, 64, said his six-cylinder van has racked up 263,000 miles without an oil change, and he plans pn running it for another 200,000 miles before cleaning the crankcase. Most mechanics advise changing oil every 3,000 miles, but Klump said he avoids that routine mainte nance by inserting a roll of toilet tis sue into a conventional filter casing and inserting it into the car’s engine. Klump said his version of toilet paper filters, first invented 23 years ago by John Franz, has been per fected by three revisions. Motorists must change toilet paper rolls every 3, (XX) miles, but the oil should remain like new for 500,000 miles, he said. He charges customers $92.50 to install the filter and adds TO to 12 quarts of oil. So far, 5,000 Lafayette motorists have purchased the filters. Paper towels are used for filters in larger vehicles. He said he is hoping to cash in financially with his invention, but so far has had no offers from manufac turers. Klump said he tried to sell his fil ters to officials at Kelly AFB in San Antonio, but blamed inept testers for giving the filter an unsatisfactory test. The case has been reopened and Klump’s filters are undergoing new tests at an Air Force installation in Warner Robins, Ga. AAA president urges use of odd-even gasoline sales United Press International WASHINGTON — The Ameri can Automobile Association is urging the 50 states to adopt a uniform sys tem of odd-even day gasoline sales and minimum purchase require ments to deal with future gas shortages. J. B. Creal, presdient of AAA, wrote the governors of all 50 states and the mayor of the District of Co lumbia Monday to plead for an end to the patchwork measures he said caused motorists hardship and con fusion. Creal said odd-even rationing days and minimum purchases helped re duce long lines at service stations. Crealy urged the states to base fu ture sales restrictions on these guidelines: —Minimum purchases of $5 for four-cylinder vehicles and $7 for others; —Odd-even sales based on license numbers, with the 31st of any month a free day. —Drivers with license plates hav ing letters and no numbers and end ing in letters A through M would be able to purchase gas on even days, N through Z on odd days.
