THE BATTALION Page 15 WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 16, 1980 d ams say they can win despite odds non!' i«k United Press International ANAHEIM, Calif. — By making ^ e defending champion Pittsburgh “ eelers 11-point favorites in Super '' )\vl XIV, the oddsmakers are con- ying a message loud and clear. They’re telling you there’s practi- I Hy no way the Los Angeles Rams ^ nwin Sunday’s ballgame, and most ople associated with professional 11 go along with that assess- nt. But Ray Malavasi, the Rams’ lve ® ach, can tell you two ways his team “jj n upset the mighty Steelers, one ing their ability to control the _)tball and run it, and the other wt j n g by getting off the kind of pass roll sh that would minimize the effec- eness of Pittsburgh quarterback rry Bradshaw. As the man who not only leads girpass rush but the one the rest of ^ e Rams look to for leadership and taf spiration, Jack Youngblood, their W teran defensive end, emerges as ™ e key to whatever meager chance ey have of surprising the Steelers. Youngblood is something to see in >el»! tionon a football field. He sacked enemy quarterbacks 16 les this past season to lead the im in that department and was idited with 51 tackles, 29 assists d three forced fumbles. Along ! ththat, he was named All-Pro for gscu ‘seventh consecutive year, xifii Fhere sonly one rub. He’s still not ayw npletely over a hairline fracture in left leg suffered a couple of weeks fcf! jinthe Rains’ playoff victory over afs uas. He’s playing hurt, but he ;ed against Tampa Bay nine days land he’ll certainly play Sunday. Right now, I feel real good. The doesn't bother me at all, he said nday. “All that stuff I’ve been iring and reading about us not ny* ing a chance against the Steelers [bunch of garbage. We deserve to in the Super Bowl as much as they tkl Ithink it’ll be a low scoring game, the keys to us winning will be if can stop their running attack and some pressure on Terry Brad- Ted Dryer, the Rams’ other start- defensive end, believes their aces of winning Sunday are “ex- ent” if they are all healthy. Against Tampa Bay, he did a good job but not what he’s capable of” Offensive guard Dennis Harrah knows what Youngblood is going through now with his leg because he broke the same bone, the fibula, in his own leg in a game with Denver early in the season and played two games on it. “It’s terrible, and playing on it is very tough to do,” Harrah said. “The fibula isn’t a weight-bearing bone. Playing on it isn’t very dangerous, but it’s dangerous enough. All year long, he kidded me about my leg. Now he says. I’ll never say anything to you again.’” Wendel Tyler was the Rams’ lead ing rusher this year with over 1,000 yards. He led the NFL with an aver age of 5.1 yards per carry and says he’ll feel like a circus performer be cause everybody will be watching him.
