Rep. Forrest Green, D- Corsicana, said Friday the fuel prob lems were caused by the DOF s allowing oil companies more leeway in selling diesel fuel on the spot market. Some farmers, Green said, will have to call it quits if the problem is not rectified by the summer harvest season, adding that the Energy and Mariculture Subcommittee would have to delve into the problem. “Unfortunately, many farmers cannot afford to pay the higher prices on the spot market,” Green said. “The subcommittee is convinced that many farmers are going to lose their crops because they cannot obtain enough fuel for normal farm ing operations.” LOST AGGIE CHRISTMAS SPECIAL! He said the deregulation of diesel has allowed oil companies to sell more fuel on the spot market. The price on the spot market averages between 90 cents and $1.14 a gallon, while allocated diesel sells from 60 to 70 cents a gallon. Green said fuel distributors — or jobbers — had complained to the subcommittee they were being forced to sell diesel at higher prices than their retail competitors. He said the oil industry manipij tion of diesel fuel was creating on al allocation problems in Itn Oklahoma and Louisiana. “We think it is strange, that the higher fuel producer! Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana are having the most aggraviij problems,” Green said Tei made spot checks and it seemsj further north you go, thelessj problems are.” Green said that in Iowa, foresa pie, distributors were cal customers to inquire if their te could hold an 8,()(X)-gallon transpi load of diesel at 65 to 72 centsai Ion. The fuel is shipped to low: pipeline from Houston. Natural gas shortage may hit Texas in 80s United Press International AUSTIN — Texans may face ener gy shortages in the 1980s that will be more severe than those of the 70s, and it is possible Texas could run out of natural gas in 7 1 /2 years, a member of the Texas Railroad Commission has said. Commissioner Jim Nugent on Fri day told a special Senate subcommit tee studying energy prospects for the 1980s oil and natural gas production in the state has been steadily declin ing, and it is doubtful the decline can ever be reversed. Oil production peaked in 1973, Nugent said, when the Railroad Commission first ordered all-out production of Texas wells, and has declined at an annual rate of about 4 percent per year since that time. Texas oil production will drop be low 1 billion barrels per year in 1978- 79 for the first time in more than a decade, he said. “The possibility of us ever being over 1 billion barrels production again is not good,” Nugent told the committee. 11 is prognosis for natural gasp duction was no better. “If we could continue to | natural gas at the rate we are mg today, we would beoutofnatu gas in 7‘/a years. We cannot conta to produce at that rate, but i could, we would run outofgasin years," Nugent said. "In summary, our oil and sources are being depleted. Nugent said problems ofregioi politics and distribution of em also complicate the energy situafe in Texas. He noted the federal govemme is encouraging Texas utilities commercial natural gas userstora vert to coal as a boiler fuel, sonata gas now produced and burned Texas may he piped to other for use as boiler fuels. “The Northeastern power does not want the risks and costs energy development. They wot! rather fix the game so they can our energy at bargain basemd prices,” he said.
