I By KURT ALLEN Battalion Sports Staff The Texas Aggies defeated Sam Houston State 71-47 Monday in a game that started out at a snails’ pace and ended the same way. The final minutes were pure frus tration for both teams as well as a G. Rollie White Coliseum crowd that seemed anxious to go home and catch the end of the Houston- Pittsburgh football game. Oblivious to the time remaining on the clock, the officials called nine fouls in the last two minutes of the game. Actually, it was only the cap per to a game in which 60 fouls in all were called against the two teams. While there was an excess of fouls, there was an equal lack of fans. Only 3,600 bothered to show up, easily making it the worst Aggie crowd of the young season. Considering that over half of those attending were non-students, it was an especially dismal turnout for the student body that barely qualified as token repre sentation. It looked as though neither team wanted to score at the beginning of the game. Both the Aggies and Bear kats played excellent defense and neither team was able to score for the first 4:30. The ice was finally broken when A&M forward Vernon Smith hit a short jumper from the right baseline. The Aggies took a 17-2 lead over Sam Houston in the second quarter. The hapless Bearkats meanwhile, must have wondered what it took to score points, as they ran afoul of both the officials and the Aggies. For a while, it was questionable whether the Bearkats would be able to score even 10 points before half time. In fact, Sam Houston scored only its second bucket of the game with 3:19 left in the first half. Only a furious Bearkat comeback narrowed the score to 27-15 by half time. Following the game, Aggie for ward Rynn Wright had an explana tion for Sam Houston’s poor shooting. “We played good defense in the first half and it seemed like they were looking for one good shot,’ Wright said. “They’d just keep tossing the ball around, looking for a chance to get it inside for the perfect shot. Of course that hurt them because it chewed up extra time on the clock. ” Wright did a little damage of his own to the Bearkats as he scored 17 points and pulled down eight re bounds to lead Texas A&M in both categories. Aggie Head Coach Shel by Metcalf later credited Wright with holding his team’s offense together. “Rynn played another solid game tonight,” Metcalf said. “He was ab out the only one who was able to hit all night. We missed some easy shots and didn’t really move the ball all that well. Other than Rynn, we didn’t have anybody consistent offensively. ” Another Aggie who played a rather solid game was freshman Claude Riley. Riley entered the game in the second quarter after Rudy Woods got into early foul trou ble. He proceeded to chalk up 11 points and grab seven rebounds dur ing 20 minutes of playing time. Somewhat lost in the shuffle was junior forward Vernon Smith, who played his usually steady game, scor ing 14 points and pulling down seven rebounds. The 14 points was below his 27 points-per-game average and just one point short of his reaching the 1,000-point plateau in his career at A&M. “I definitely thought they (Sam Houston) did a good job defensive ly,” said Metcalf. “That’s the best pressure we’ve faced this year and I think this Sam Houston team’s going to be a good one.” Looking ahead to Wednesday’s game, Metcalf pointed out that East Texas State is currently 4-0 on the year. Their latest win came against Langston. The ETSU victory broke a 35-game winning streak at home for Langston. The Ags and ETSU will tip off at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in G. One week remains in the regular season and unlike in past seasons, the Super Bowl champion Steelers are still fighting for their lives, thanks in part to the Houston Oilers 20-17 win over them Monday night. Both teams have 11-4 records. “I said it last week, just as I have all season. Dan is my kind of quarter back,” Oilers coach Bum Phillips said after the Monday win, his first over the Steelers in the Astrodome. Phillips was under pressure ear lier this season to bench Pastorini as the 10-year veteran passed poorly due to a rehabilitating right shoulder infection. He completed only four passes in a 38-7 loss to the Steelers in the second game of this season. Monday night, however, 1 sed as he did when he cani Oilers to within one gamcofl per Bowl last season.
