Battalion photo by Lee Roy Leschper Jr. By SEAN PETTY Battalion Sports Editor Today is Pearl Harbor Day but you would have thought there was a reenactment of that fateful day in 1941 last night in G. Rollie White Coliseum as the Aggies bombed Texas Lutheran College, 105-65. The lead bomber was 6-8 forward Vernon Smith who pumped in a career-high 32 points to help sink the Lions. While the Aggies finally walked away with a 40-point victory, the game started out looking like the Aggies were destined for their third loss in five games. “It looked like we hadn’t thawed out since the Alaska Tournament at the beginning of the game tonight,” said Aggie coach Shelby Metcalf, “but we finally got things going the right way.” Metcalf s description was accurate as the ice-cold Aggies first bucket came with 14:55 left in the first half which was a good five minutes into the game. And after six minutes of play, Texas Lutheran had outscored the Ags 16-8. The man who provided the spark that warmed the cold Aggies was junior-transfer Robert Wright. Wright came off the bench and started moving the team and making things happen as the Aggies ripped off 15-straight points and took a 23- 16 lead which they never relin quished. Wright had six assists in the first half and finished the game with 10. “I just wanted to get in there and run the offense,” Wright said. “I wanted to show the people here I can play. My game is assists and I had 10 tonight so I did what I’m supposed to do. “They’ve got to watch me. If I penetrate I tell the guys on the team tp watch me because I’m going to pass it somewhere.” The Aggies, behind the hot- shooting of Smith, built a 51-31 lead at the half. Smith scored 16 of his 32 points by the half and the Aggies dominated the boards throughout. Center Rudy Woods ruled the boards with 11 rebounds by halftime and finished the game with 19. Woods also tossed in 15 points and blocked five shots. The Aggies put on a show for the small G. Rollie crowd of 4,010 in the second half with several dunks and some fine ball handling. Smith had a dunk with 12:00 left in the game which shook the walls and brought the crowd to its feet. But the Wright Brothers were not to be outdone. The Wright Brothers, Rynn and Robert (no relation), hooked up on an alley-oop dunk which had the crowd roaring. Rob softly lofted the ball towards the bas ket and Rynn came in high from the right side and slammed it home. Metcalf was able to use all of the players on the bench but three in particular shined. Freshman Claude Riley scored 10 points and grabbed four rebounds and blocked one shot. Sophomore-transfer Bruce Sooter also played well in his first game for the Aggies. “Rob (Wright) and Sooter made the night worthwhile, " Metcalf said. “Claude relaxes every time he plays. He’s going to a super-fine player. “We still need work on both ends of the court and in the middle. This game helped a lot because we have to build momentum and intensity and get ready for the conference schedule. “We re finally starting to shoot a little better. We shot poorly in Alas ka against Lamar (26E). So I think we ll relax more and shoot a lot better.” The Aggies finished the game with a 44.3 percent shooting average and an impressive 90.5 percent from the free-throw line. The Aggies next game is Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in G. Rollie White Col- isuem against the Vermont Cata mounts. TEXAS LUTHERAN (65) Randall 8 2-2 18, Huggins 2 0-1 4, Glover 5 5-8 15, Bond 0 3-4 3, Kel.
