NOVEMBER 6, 1979 the sports Texas schools get straight A’s United Press International AUSTIN — The establishment of a new classification and elimination of one old division was announced by the University Interscholastic League for Texas high schools. Almost every school in the state has been placed in a new class or district. It primarily affects the ath letics programs but will also figure into all levels of school competition under the UIL. Gone is the old Class B for the smaller schools. Beginning in 1980-81, they will be classified as Class A schools. And the largest high schools will be in Class AAAAA instead of Class AAAA. Other levels will be increased by one to Classes AA, AAA and AAAA. There will still be five classifications however. Eliminated in most cases will be United Press International FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Those two fumbles or near-fumbles by Houston in the fourth quarter of its 13- 10 comeback victory over Arkan sas two weeks ago remain a topic of conversation. Tom Turbiville, assistant informa tion director for the Southwest Con ference, said in a radio interview at halftime of the Rice-Arkansas game Saturday that conference officials considered both calls, “close but correct. ” When he heard about it Sunday, Arkansas coach Lou Holtz was visibly angry and called Hal Lahar, the SWC supervisor of officials. Holtz said Lahar confirmed what he had told the Arkansas coaching staff earlier, namely, that the conference office believes the two calls in favor of Houston to have been in error. Houston tight end Garrett Jurgaj- tis was credited with a catch of a 14- yard pass on a crucial third-down play. Those who disputed the call maintained that the correct call should have been either a fumble after the completion which Arkansas recovered or an incomplete pass. Later on a play that reached the Arkansas seven, Houston running back Terald Clark lost the ball and again Arkansas recovered. Officials zone play. Instead, realignments will swap some schools into different districts and have all competition on a district level instead of a zone level. The largest class AAAAA will be divided into 32 districts. Class AAAA will have 16 districts. Class AAA will consist of 32 districts. Class AA will have 32 districts and Class A will have 16 districts. Six- man football previously known as Class B six-man football will be listed only as six-man and will con sist of eight districts. As in previous years, the number ing of the districts begins in west Texas and moves across the state to east Texas and the Gulf Coast and then down to southwest Texas. The realignment announcement ruled he was down before he fum bled. In the radio interview with Tur biville, which was aired by the 91- station University of Arkansas foot ball network, Turbiville said he heard Lahar discussing the findings of the film evaluation with Dotson Lewis who assists in the grading and overseeing of SWC officials. was met with both mixed reaction from school officials and coaches of the schools moved into new sur roundings. In the Dallas area, several of this year’s Class AAAA teams have been dropped back one classification and will remain AAAA next year while their previous league foes have moved into the new Class AAAAA.
