MIDLAND — More than 1,200
persons gathered Tuesday for a
sun-washed, pro-oil industry rally on
the county courthouse grounds and
heard actress Jane Fonda labeled an
enemy of free enterprise.
The rally, co-sponsored by the
West Texas Geological Society and
the Permian Basin Petroleum As
sociation, preceded by a day a series
of “Stop the Oil Profiteers” anti-oil
rallies scheduled in 20 American
cities. Police estimated the crowd at
between 1,200 and 1,500.
Mayor Ernest D. Angelo Jr., a pe
troleum engineer, proclaimed Tues
day “Oil Appreciation Day in Mid
land as the lunch-hour crowd inter
rupted five speeches with applause
during the 35-minute rally.
Former chamber of commerce
president Harrell Feldt told the
crowd the oil industry “stands for
free enterprise,” and said the indus
try had developed the technology to
produce most of the world’s energy.
Feldt, who said Fonda is an
“enemy of free enterprise, offered
indirect praise for the loose anti-oil
coalition led by Fonda, her husband,
Tom Hayden, and Ralph Nader.
