The rally, co-sponsored by the West Texas Geological Society and the Permian Basin Petroleum As sociation, preceded by a day a series of “Stop the Oil Profiteers” anti-oil rallies scheduled in 20 American cities. Police estimated the crowd at between 1,200 and 1,500. Mayor Ernest D. Angelo Jr., a pe troleum engineer, proclaimed Tues day “Oil Appreciation Day in Mid land as the lunch-hour crowd inter rupted five speeches with applause during the 35-minute rally. Former chamber of commerce president Harrell Feldt told the crowd the oil industry “stands for free enterprise,” and said the indus try had developed the technology to produce most of the world’s energy.
