Aggies prepare for big battl(
By SEAN PETTY
Battalion Sports Editor
It’s being billed as, “The Battle
for Survival in the Southwest Con
ference.”
And although that description of
the Texas A&M-Texas Tech game
may be a little too dramatic, it is
theoretically correct.
Consider the situation that the
surprising Baylor Bears have put the
Aggies and Red Raiders in. Both
teams have played one conference
game and both were beaten by the
Bears who were supposed to finish
the season playing marbles with the

Owls and the Horned Frogs some
where in the SWC cellar.
Both teams must play Texas,
Houston and Arkansas on down the
road. Not fun.
You will hear all the cliches —
backs against the wall; worked into a
corner; do or die; now or never.
Whatever, it’s all the same, both
teams gotta win the durn ball game.
The Tumbleweed Bowl will fea
ture two evenly matched teams ex
periencing similar problems on of
fense, that is, putting the ball in the
end zone. Both the Ags and Raiders
boast strong, quick defenses. Inten
sity and motivation will be no prob
lem this week.
That was the situation the last
time the Aggies mounted up and
headed for the high plains of West
Texas in 1977. The Aggies’ 33-17
victory was not indicative of the
game which saw the Raiders lead
the game through the first three
quarters.
The Aggies, led by the Wishbone
attack of quarterback David Walker,
fullback George Woodard and
halfbacks Curtis Dickey and David
Brothers, were supposed to finish
high in the SWC. The Aggies also
carried one of the best kickers in the
country in Tony Franklin.

AUSTIN — Texas walk-on
barefoot kicker John Goodson
was placed on an athletic schol
arship Wednesday by the Long
horns because of his performance
against opponents this year.
Goodson is ranked fourth in
the nation in kicking field goals,
hitting on five in seven attempts.
He also has kicked three of three
extra points.
The scholarship announce
ment was made by Longhorn
coach Fred Akers.
Akers also said the team work
out was better Wednesday than
it had been earlier in the week.
“They knew more what to do
against the complicated Rice of

this week’s opponent.
