United Press International IRVING — For the first time this season, the Dallas Cowboys could look in the mirror Sunday and rec ognize themselves. Dallas came up with 119 rushing yards from Tony Dorsett, two touchdown passes from Roger Staubach, three interceptions, kept pressure on the quarterback all day and did not fumble the ball a single time. It’s hard for all of that to add up to anything but a victory, and that’s what the Cowboys got — a 38-13 win over the winless Cincinnati Bengals. Dallas was in need of a quality performance. The Cowboys had struggled to win their first three games and then were flattened last Monday night by the Cleveland Browns. “This was the first game that we had that good feeling,” said Dallas coach Tom Landry. “Everything just seemed to click. “We had been losing our confi dence quite a bit after that Monday night game and we hadn’t played well in the other three. So this was a key confidence builder.” The Cowboys, of course, did not build their confidence against a Super Bowl contender. The Bengals have lost all five starts and seemed to wilt Sunday in the heat that reached 100 degrees on the artificial surface. But a win is a win and this one allowed the Cowboys to keep pace at 4-1 with the Washington Red skins and Philadelphia Eagles. “Their third-down conversions (10 of 15) killed us,” said Cincinnati coach Homer Rice. “And our de fense hasn’t been playing well. The intensity isn’t there. We re not get ting the pass rush (Staubach was not sacked Sunday) that we did last year. “Despite the loss I think we’re going to get things turned around and I know we had better. I don’t think we re an 0-5 football team. We have too many good football players.” Cincinnati jumped to a 3-0 lead the first time it had the ball Sunday, but on the Bengals’ next possession strong safety Randy Hughes inter cepted a pass by Ken Anderson and ran it 68 yards to the Cincinnati 3-yard line. It was all downhill from there. Fullback Scott Laidlaw scored on the next play and he scored again early in the second quarter on a 1-yard run after the Cowboys had driven 69 yards. Another long drive of 83 yards ended in a 3-yard touchdown throw from Staubach to Billy Joe DuPree and gave Dallas a 21-6 halftime lead. After Anderson drove Cincinnati to a touchdown early in the second half, coming on a 10-yard pass to tight end Don Bass, Dallas struck back on a 26-yard field goal by Rafael Septien and then put the game out of reach. Rookie Aaron Mitchell inter cepted another Anderson pass, ran it back 36 yards, and set up a 9-yard touchdown throw from Staubach to Tony Hill. Ron Springs tacked on a 1-yard scoring plunge with nine seconds to play. “I have been pickingupab week,” said Dorsett, who! second 100-yard day of the s and who had 81 yards in tlit| quarter alone. “It was a big plus to start r the ball early and control thef It seemed like I was alwaysp break one. I came close: times.” Hill caught five passes fe| yards and Drew Pearson i three to reach the 30( plateau. “The difference in our today was no fumbles and thosl turnovers by the defense, said| “Right now I have only one j be a starter on a Super Bowlc pionship team.” And for the first time thiss the Cowboys looked as if theycj be one.
