Thirty graduate and under graduate students left Thursday night for Amarillo on the Panhandle Agribusiness Field Study Trip and will tour the High Plains today, Saturday and Sunday. Dr. H oward Hesby, associate professor of animal science and coordinator of the trip, said the group will be traveling more than 1,000 miles in University vans this weekend. “It’s going to be a long busy trip but we ought to see some very in teresting businesses, Hesby said. The group will drive all night, arriv ing in Amarillo by 7 a.m. today to visit the Texas Cattle Feeders head quarters for discussions with cattle- The students will also be visiting Iowa Beef Packers, the largest beef packing plant in the United States, the American Quarter Horse As sociation headquarters, a purebred Hereford ranch and various live stock feeding operations. Hesby said, “We had planned to stop at a cowhide tannery on Satur day morning, but they called me Monday and canceled because of an acid leak which destroyed the con crete flooring of the building. They are trying to rebuild it. ” Janice Brown, an animal science major and initiator of the field trip, said, “Last spring we traveled in South Texas one weekend so I told Dr. Hesby that this fall we ought to what we or the travel in my home area call God’s Country Panhandle of Texas. “Dr. Hesby said OK and with the help of many communities, old Ags, businesses and my dad, we are tak ing the trip,” Brown said. “There just isn’t any way we could afford to go without all these folks’ help. They stood behind us, so tonight we are leaving for the High Plains of Texas,’ Brown said. The animal science department also sponsors two annual trips — a statewide tour of Texas and an ag ribusiness field study trip. ★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★■A-* | iwhmMANOR EAST i * MANOR EAST MALL 823-8300 t * Aggies to head for Terlingua A&M chili team aims at title Tc * * * * * * * * * * * * * 4c * * 4c 4c * * * * * 4* * -K * * * 4c * * * * * * * * * * * * * * 4c * * * * * * REMEMBER AGGIES, ITS ONE DOLLAR OFF THE REGULAR ADULT ADMISSION WITH TAMU ID WHICH MUST BE PRESENTED WHEN TICKETS ARE PURCHASED, GOOD ONLY MONTH OF SEPTEMBER. iHe was tough enough for the streets.... was he tough enough to leave them? By STEVE CRITCHFIELD Battalion Reporter Once a year, the silence of the small West Texas ghost town of Ter lingua is disrupted by a flurry of ac tivity from civilization. Hungry, fun-loving onlookers and partici pants at the World Championship Chili Cooking Contest fill the streets. This year, the Aggie Chili Team will be amid the crowd. Team captain Clifford Dorn said the team accumulated the necessary points to enter the championship last Saturday at the State Chili Cook-off Championship — the Re public of Texas Chilympiad in San Marcos. The team placed second in showmanship out of 250 competing teams with its “Hullabaloo Chili.” Dorn said the Terlingua event, scheduled for Nov. 3-4, requires a total of 12 points in showmanship or six points in chili cooking from Ter lingua-sanctioned cook-offs. Each first place finish receives three points, second place, two, and third place, one. A chili cook-off takes place almost any weekend somewhere in Texas, Dorn said, and his 25-member team sometimes splits up to enter con tests near hometowns of its mem bers. This allows a greater chance to accumulate points. Dorn said the Aggie Chili Team has existed for almost two years and has placed in all but one of the con tests it entered.
