Page 12 THE BATTALION FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 1979 Astros top Braves, 7-1; Reds next Purdue picked again United Press International What did we say about Purdue? At least you’ve learned never to bet your monthly mortgage money on the Boilermakers. But, remember, we said they were erratic. After blowing out Wisconsin in their season opener two weeks ago, the Boilermakers were upset by UCLA last Saturday night and dropped from the weekly ratings. This week they find out if they have been shortchanged by the UPI Board of Coaches or if they’re only pretenders in the top 10 circle. The Boilermakers’ opponent this Saturday is Notre Dame, which upset Michigan last Saturday to climb to the No. 5 spot in the weekly ratings. Purdue’s last major upset against Notre Dame came in 1974 when quarterback Mike Phipps engi neered a 31-24 victory that snapped the Irish’s 12-game regular season winning streak. The time seems ripe for another one. Whatever the reason, we like the Boilermakers to pull an upset Saturday and stun the Irish, 21-10, behind Mark Herrmann’s passing. Here’s how we see the major games around the nation: The East Penn St. 22 Texas A&M 14 — Wouldn’t the Nittany Lions’ All- America tackles Clark and Millen make a great tag-team wrestling combo? North Carolina St. 30 West Virginia 7 — Playing Mountaineers makes anybody’s mouth water. Navy 31 Connecticut 10 — What’s good for Army is even better for Navy. Boston College 18 Villanova 13 — Eagles proved against Tennessee they’re better than preseason prog nosis. Bears The South Alabama 23 Baylor 16 make Bear bare teeth. Georgia 21 Clemson 14 — Bulldogs still can’t believe they lost to a golf school. Missouri 30 Mississippi 17 — Ti gers tune up for date with Texas next week. Pittsburgh 32 North Carolina 6 — What’s a Tar Heel anyway? The Midwest Purdue 23 Notre Dame 14 will have five starters out game with injuries. Michigan 28 Kansas 8 — Wol verines can handle this kind of com petition easily. UCLA 25 Wisconsin 14 — Bruins badger Badgers with Bashore’s bombs. (Egad!). The Southwest Arkansas 26 Oklahoma St. 7 — Razorbacks scheduled two easy ones for Little Rock fans. Texas 30 Iowa St. 13 — Long horns’ flash speed in season opener. LSU 30 Rice 0 — Tigers dedi cated to giving Coach Charley McClendon a rousing sendoff in his last season. United Press International HOUSTON — Terry Puhl col lected three hits, drove in two runs and scored twice and right-hander Ken Forsch scattered nine hits Thursday night to help the Houston Astros to a 7-1 victory over the At lanta Braves. Forsch, who has been bothered by a sore right shoulder, pitched his 10th complete game but his fitst since July 28 as he raised his record to 11-6. He struck out two and walked one. Atlanta starter Tommy Boggs, 0-1, lasted just three innings and suffered the loss. Jose Cruz’ RBI single in the first inning drove in Puhl, who singled, stole second and moved the third on a fly ball, to give the Astros a 1-0 lead. In the third inning, Puhl, who raised his average to .282, doubled to ignite a three-run rally. He moved to third on Craig Reynolds’ sacrifice and came home on Cesar Cedeno’s single. A fielding error by shortstop Darrel Chaney on Enos Cabell’s two-out grounder allowed Cedeno to score the first of two un earned runs in the inning, and Jeff Leonard followed with a run scoring single. The Astros added three unearned runs in the eighth after shortstop Chaney committed a throwing error as Cabell reached first to lead off the inning. Leonard followed with a single and Luis Pujols singled home Cabell. Rafael Landestoy reached on a fielder’s choice and Puhl drove in both runners with his second double. The Braves’ lone run came in the eighth on Joe Nolan’s RBI single. ■■ Friday night means in Bryan-College Station Tonight’s Games: 21 September BRYAN at Nacogdoches ALLEN at Memorial Hall (Houston) Saturday’s Game: 22 September CONSOLIDATED at Furr (Houston-Barnett) a public service message from the fans; at Anco Never bei Controvei hools.
